‘I live in one of the world’s most walkable cities’ (2024)

London is one of the world’s most walkable cities, according to a study produced by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP).

The study found that many London residents live within 100m of a car-free area, such as a square, park or pedestrian area. London’s residents were also usually within 1km of healthcare and education facilities.

After living here for a couple of years, I’d say that’s definitely true. Nearly all of my friends, who live in different areas of the city, live close by to a park or pedestrian area.

The Big Smoke is also a walkable city for tourists, with many of the city’s main attractions within walking distance.

For example, tourists can walk from the National Gallery to the Houses of Parliament in just 15 minutes.

The Tate Modern and The British Museum, two of London’s leading attractions, are just over half an hour’s walk from each other.

While London is known for traffic jams, pedestrians will find most streets in central London have wide pavements and several areas such as Covent Garden are completely pedestrianised.

London is surprisingly quite a green city and there are around 3,000 parks in the city which offer tourists and residents space to breathe and relax.

However, London is an extremely expensive city and unless tourists want to pay high prices, they often have to stay outside the city centre.

In a study forExpress.co.uk, we found that Newham and Brent are the cheapest areas to stay for tourists looking for a bargain.

Due to London’s size, tourists staying outside the city centre will nearly always need to use public transport to reach the main attractions. This makes London less walkable than more compact cities such as Ljubljana, in Slovenia.

Despite this, many of London’s neighbourhoods have their own attractions and tourists are unlikely to be out of walking distance from supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and bars.

Once in the city centre, it’s easy to explore the capital on foot and many attractions are within walking distance from each other.
