Pantry Essentials refers to ingredients and foods that should be stored on a regular basis, and are common in most recipes. These include dry goods, refrigerated and frozen items.
Print, bookmark or share this list so you can keep track your kitchen inventory. The goal is to purchase these as you can, and keep them stocked when you are low or run out.
It’s a lot to purchase all at once, so buy these at your own pace and work towards completing the list. Start with the ones you think you’d use most then keep adding.
After taking inventory, separate your pantry items into one of four groups: keep, toss, compost, or donate. Start by checking the expiration dates on all of your items. Toss anything that's expired as well as: Stale crackers or bread.
Pasta, grains, canned goods, spices, and baking staples are the types of pantry essentials everyone should keep in their kitchen. These foods are the basis of many meals and have a longer shelf life than items you store in the refrigerator.
List all of the items you have in your pantry and how many. If you're also tracking your fridge and freezer items, you may also want a “location” column. Think about everything from spices and sauces to canned items and baking must-haves.
Take the amount of food you'd typically need to purchase to feed your family for a day, multiply by seven, and you've got a one-week supply. Each week (or month if you're low on funds), try to buy one extra week's worth of food. Gradually expand and build up to a one month stock, then a three-month supply, etc.
Larders tend to be cool, dry areas, making them great for storing different types of food, while pantries are often small rooms or cupboards, so the temperature is less regulated.
Include versatile staples like whole grains such as rice and pasta, along with a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamins and fiber. Don't forget lean proteins like chicken, fish, and tofu for satisfying meals. Keep pantry items like canned beans, tomatoes, and olive oil for quick and flavorful dishes.
