Squirrels are interesting characters. You often see them darting across the street, playing chicken with you while driving, scaling trees and standing on their hind legs with the utmost curiosity. Needless to say, they know how to save their nuts. Squirrels collect and store nuts so they’ll have food to last through the winter. They are some of the ultimate "preppers" of their kingdom. They instinctively know that if they don’t set food aside they may not survive. Just as squirrels save their nuts for winter and rainy days, if you haven’t already, you should be doing the same. Here are some ways you too can save like a squirrel.
- Put it away: Every two weeks you should be putting a set amount of money away in your savings. Even if it’s only $50 - $100 per pay check. The more you add, the more nuts you’ll have like a squirrel for a rainy day.
- Larger Bills: When you’re at the store or at the local Starbucks, pay in cash with larger bills. Put the change that you receive back in your piggy bank. For 6 months I tested this. I took the change, including both five and one dollar bills and put them away. By the end of 6 months I saved more than $800.00!
- Plan Ahead: As you know, I’ve said this countless of times, budget, budget, budget. There’s nothing like having everything organized and knowing where your money is coming and going. You’ll be surprised how much you’re spending on impulse buys at your local convenience store.
- Avoid Debt: Credit cards are the easiest and fastest way to be in the hole. Once you’re in the hole it feels like more dirt is piling in when you’re trying to get out. The interest rates with credit cards can really eat away at your pocket. Use your credit card on purchases knowingly you can pay them off within two months.
- The Art of Frugality: Some people prefer to purchase the brand name items, yet the ingredients are exactly the same (most products) as non-brand name items. Some don’t like to use coupons, and some won’t waste their time with bargain shopping. Take the extra steps in being a little more frugal, and remember frugal does not mean cheap, it means you care how you spend your money!
Saving your money is key. If I could write a letter to my younger self well, I would say a lot of things, but one thing I would implore is to save money. You should always enjoy life, have fun and make lasting memories. But live by your means. If you can’t afford that item you’ve been so excited to purchase, set a goal, set a deadline and save your nuts. Before you know it you’ll have a nest full and you’ll be the king of the forest.
