Basic Steps for Protecting Computers

• Check your workstation’s setup.
• Use a strong password.Guide to NetID password requirements.
• Use a password-protected screen saver.
• Configure your computer to lock the screen automatically after 10-15 minutes.
• Turn on the system firewall.
• Keep your operating system updated.
• Install up-to-date anti-virus software and enable automatic updates.
• Keep your applications updated.
• Turn off file and print sharing if not needed.
• Periodically check Windows Security Center, which monitors the status of your computer’s firewall, automatic Microsoft updates, malware protection, Internet connection settings, and user account settings.

Other suggestions:

• If you are running Internet Explorer, switch browsers. Internet Explorer is subject to the largest number of security threats.
• Be cautious when downloading (Kreb’s 3 Basic Rules for Online Safety):
  • If you didn’t go looking for it, don’t download it;
  • If you installed it, update it;
  • If you no longer need it, remove it.
• Use secure wireless when possible, and be wary of public Wi-Fi.
• Lock your computer when you leave it.
• Make sure your data is regularly backed up (automatically the case with UT’s network and cloud storage).
