I recently started blogging and was having a hard time believing that people could really make money blogging. I figured that there were a select few who have gotten lucky, but for most average bloggers, it just wasn’t possible.Until I read about Michelle’s course, making sense of affiliate marketing. I did a little research about Michelle and found out just how successful her blog is. Last year alone, she made nearly $1 million from her blog and the bulk of that came from affiliate marketing. I figured if I could make even a small fraction of that, I’d be extremely pleased.

I knew if I was going to try to make any money, I wanted to learn from the expert. So I enrolled in Michelle’s class, making sense of affiliate marketing. And I am so glad I did! My page views have increased 7x what they were and I now have successful affiliate posts! And I only completed the course 2 weeks ago!

How did you get started with blogging?

My start into blogging is an interesting one. I never thought I would grow up and become a full-time blogger – not even one bit!

In August of 2011, almost 6 years ago, I started Making Sense of Cents with the aim of helping others how to save money after reading a magazine that featured a personal finance website in one of their articles. Due to that website, I became extremely interested in personal finance blogs, and my interest in blogging just grew from there. It was all just a hobby. I was hoping to help others with their financial situation while also learning about my own.

I did not create my blog with the intention of making money blogging. It was all just a hobby like I said. However, I realized that I enjoyed blogging (and I still do!), and eventually left my financial analyst job so that I could blog full time.

This is the best decision I’ve ever made!

Why do you blog?

My reasoning for blogging is a little different from when I first started, but it’s still very similar too. On Making Sense of Cents, I talk a lot about different ways to make extra income, money saving tips, living your dream life, RVing (me and my husband RV full-time), and more. I enjoy helping others improve their financial situation and I enjoying blogging – so I blog!

What one piece of advice would you give to new bloggers/entrepreneurs?

My one piece of advice that I would give a new blogger or entrepreneur is that I recommend networking as much as you can. One big blogging mistake that I’ve noticed many other bloggers make is not making the effort to network. Networking is so important as a blogger. You should see others in the blogging world as your colleagues and friends, not your enemies or competition. You can learn a lot from others in your industry.

What’s your goal for 2017?

I have a few goals for 2017. I would like to earn more than $1,000,000, I would like to get 3 months ahead in content, and create a new product to sell.

How do you make money as a blogger? Is it really possible to make a good income?

I make money as a blogging in three main ways: 1) affiliate marketing; 2) sponsorships and partnerships with other companies; and 3) display advertising. And yes, it’s definitely possible to make a good income blogging. But, it’s not always easy. Blogging is a real business and requires hard work, long hours, and lots of learning.

Why did you develop your affiliate course? How can others benefit from your course as a new/small blogger?

I decided to develop Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing because I was constantly asked about affiliate marketing. What seemed normal and easy to me, isn’t easy for others, so I knew I had to create this course so that I could get my knowledge out. Affiliate marketing is great, and I want others to benefit from it as well!

What has been your biggest accomplishment with your blog so far?

I would say that my biggest accomplishment is helping a lot of people improve their financial situation. I love receiving emails from readers where they tell me how my blog has helped them pay off their debt, start their dream business, save for retirement, and so on. It’s such a great feeling!

What’s your favorite place you have visited while you have been traveling?

We have so many favorite places that we have loved visiting so far on our full-time travels! We love being in the mountains in Colorado, along the west coast, in the deserts in Utah and Arizona, and near the beach. Our favorite place is anywhere that’s near a national park.

Where do you call home?

Our RV 🙂

What are three things you couldn’t live without?

My husband and our two dogs!

What one word would your husband use to describe you?

Ambitious.
