When installing your own fence, every detail counts. Beyond choosing the right material based on which type of fence is the most durable, easiest to maintain, and/or most secure, you’ll need to consider the construction of your fence, down to the correct diameter of your fence posts.
The post diameter is integral to building a fence because that will be the entire fence’s foundation. If you have a poor post diameter, your fence will likely sustain more damage and therefore have a shorter lifespan/overall.
In considering the fence post diameter, it’s very important to determine the long-term goals of your fence: what’s its main use? How long do you want it to last? What can cause the most damage? What kind of fence is it?
These factors will help you make the right decision.
By taking this into consideration, you can find the best balance between functionality and cost-effectiveness when deciding on the right diameter for your fence posts.
General Best Practice
Remember that your posts should always be taller than the fencing materials. This provides a solid foundation for your fence. Tall, thick posts contribute to the overall sturdiness and durability of your fence.
For example, if the fence’s height is six feet your posts should be four by four inches in diameter with additional length (1/3 the height of your fence) to bury in the ground. As the height of your fence increases, so should the size of your post.
Fence Post Spacing
The spacing between posts plays a part in determining the best post diameter too. The closer together they are, the stronger the fence will be. If you have less space in between posts, the thickness won’t need to be as great. But the more space there is, the thicker your posts should be.
Natural factors such as weather, wear and tear, or animals can impact the longevity of the fence, but with a solid foundation, it’s less likely.
Fence Post Materials Matter
Consider the material of your fence posts. When it comes to wood fence posts, store-bought treated wood posts are a great option and look neat and tidy. They’re resistant to rotting and usually don’t require frequent replacement or maintenance.
