- Use Command Prompt to see the total installed RAM: systeminfo | findstr /C:"Total Physical Memory".
- It's also available through Control Panel and System Information.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), then Performance > Memory to check live RAM details.
For various reasons, it's good to know the total installed RAM on Windows 10, plus the amount of available or unused memory. A few ways to do this include using the command line. Which option you choose depends on which method feels more convenient to you.
How to Check RAM Using Command Prompt
It's simple to check the total and available RAM using Command Prompt. If you're unsure how to get there, learn how to open Command Prompt and pick which command you want to use.
To see the total RAM, enter this:
systeminfo|findstr/C:"TotalPhysicalMemory"
Or use this command to check available RAM:
systeminfo|find"AvailablePhysicalMemory"
These figures are in megabytes. To convert to gigabytes, divide by 1024.
Use Control Panel to See Total Physical RAM
Another way to check RAM in Windows 10 is to use Control Panel. This shows how much RAM is installed on your computer.
Open Control Panel. The easiest way is to search for it from the taskbar.
Select System.
Under the System heading, next to Installed memory (RAM), is the total amount of RAM that's in your computer.
Usable memory differs from installed memory because the computer reserves installed RAM specifically for hardware installed in the system. Because of this, usable RAM will always be slightly less than installed RAM.
Check Available RAM With System Information
The System Information utility lets you see the RAM that's available for use right now by your apps. It's super simple to see this information, and you can refresh it at any time to see the most up-to-date amount of free memory.
Open the Run dialog box by pressing WIN+R.
Another way to get there is through the Power User Menu: Right-click the Start button and choose Run.
Type msinfo32, then press Enter.
Select System Summary at the top-left of the tool, then locate the Total Physical Memory and Available Physical Memory entries on the right to see that information.
View Real-Time RAM Usage With Task Manager
In addition to everything else Task Manager is good for, it's the best way to get a live view of your RAM usage. Go here if you want to see how a particular program impacts available RAM. It also shows how much memory is currently in use and how much is installed.
Open Task Manager. One quick way is to press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
Select the Performance tab at the top. If you don't see that, select More details first.
Select Memory from the left.
The amount of memory being used right now is shown on the left, given as a fraction over the total amount of installed RAM. Below the chart are additional details, including free RAM under Available.
Windows' built-in tools are useful for seeing RAM details, but they're not your only options. There are also lots of third-party system information tools that provide this information and plenty more.
Why You Should Check RAM
Knowing the total RAM and the available RAM in Windows 10 can help with many things, including:
- Diagnosing a slow computer: If your available RAM is always low, it could explain why your computer is running slowly.
- Meeting software requirements: Knowing your total RAM helps to determine ifyour computer meets the specificationsto run certain software.
- Upgrading hardware: Checking total RAM is necessary when purchasing and upgrading memory.
Since RAM provides quick read and write access to data when you run software, verifying that you have enough RAM installed for your needs is very important.
