How much do you need to make to be considered middle-class in Indiana? (2024)

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Nationwide, the household income needed to be considered a part of the middle-class has increased significantly. An income of $35,364 made you a member of the middle-class in 2012.

In 2022, that figure increased to $50,099, and was the lowest minimum salary to be considered middle-class.

In 2012 a salary of $32,249 in Indiana was the minimum to be considered middle-class. That figure increased to $44,782 in 2022. That’s a 38.86% increase in 10 years.

The maximum income to be part of the middle class in Indiana $134,346.

Ashley Ryan, works at an Indianapolis bank. “I think the $134 (thousand) max for middle class is high. That’s like a two-person income. It’s almost me and my husband’s income.”

Inflation, the rising cost of housing, health care, and education have bumped up expenses for the average American, making it even more costly to be part of the middle class. Plus, it takes even more money to move to the next income bracket. Guangjun Qu, an associate professor of economics at DePauw University in Greencastle, says that’s worrisome. “It becomes harder to move up, and this is the systematic issue in the United States, higher income inequality.”

Despite the rising cost of everything, Qu says people can still act to make more money. “The big difference between middle class and upper class: The upper class did a lot of stock investment, so they benefitted a lot from their investment.”

Where does Indiana rank in relation to other states? Indiana ranks 30th, according to a study conducted by GoBankingRates.

Maryland has the highest salary to be considered middle-class at $65,641. Mississippi has the lowest at $35,323.

Alaska had the least amount of change in the last 10 years, with an increase of 25%.

The biggest increase was in Oregon, who saw a 53.15% increase in 10 years.

The study also looked at what it takes to reach the next level of wealth. In 2012 the highest household income considered to be middle class was $106,092. In 2022, that figure reached $150,298, an increase of 41.67%.
