Introduction
Financial institutions charge merchant fees whenever they provide a payment service.
Service NSW may recover merchant fees plus the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on credit and debit card payments as well as on online payment services such as PayPal and PayID.
Fee rates
The merchant fee is a percentage of the total payment amount. The percentage depends on the payment method, such as:
- credit and debit card payments (Mastercard, Visa, American Express,Diners Club and UnionPay International), or
- online payment services (PayPal and PayID).
The merchant fee including GSTwill be added on top of the total amount you need to pay.
Mastercard and Visa
When you make a credit or debit payment using a Mastercard or Visa card, the merchant fee recovered is up to 0.44% of the total amount payable.
American Express and Diners Club
When you make a payment using an American Express or Diners Club card, the merchant fee recovered is up to 1.54% of the total amount payable.
UnionPay International (UPI)
When you make a credit or debit payment using a UPI card, the merchant fee recovered is up to 1.76% of the total amount payable.
PayPal
When you make a payment through PayPal, the merchant fee recovered varies. For most transactions, it is 0.44%, with the maximum charge being 1.21% of the total amount payable.
The exact percentage applicable to your transaction will be indicated on the payments page.
PayID
When you make a payment through PayID, the merchant fee recovered is 55 cents per transaction.
BPAY
There is no merchant fee for using BPAY.
What you'll be charged
Before you confirm your payment details, you'll be shown dollar amounts for the:
- cost of your transaction
- GST amount that applies to the cost of your transaction (if it's a taxable good or service)
- merchant fee amount (inclusive ofGST)
- total amount that you'll be charged.
