How long does it take to send money online?

This depends on where you are, and where you’re sending money to. Transferring money between your own accounts, for example, happens instantly. Internal transfers within SEPA, including the Republic of Ireland, take one working day. It also takes one working day for customers sending money internally within Northern Ireland and Great Britain. In both cases however this is subject to certain conditions which we talk about below. When we use the term working day, this excludes Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

Sending money in one working day: rules and cut-off times

SEPA zone (EUR) payments

Money can be sent to a SEPA zone (see list below) payee’s account within one working day provided:

You make the payment before these cut-off times:

2.30pm in the Republic of Ireland
4.30pm in Northern Ireland and Great Britain

Payment is made between Monday and Friday, excluding bank holidays
The payment is covered by the Payment Services Regulations (PSR).

UK domestic payee (GBP) payments

Money can be sent within Northern Ireland and Great Britain to a UK domestic payee’s account within one working day provided:

You make the payment before 4.30pm in NI/GB
Payment is made between Monday and Friday, excluding bank holidays.

Bill payments

Bills can be paid through the bill payment feature within one working day, provided you make the payment before these cut-off times:

3.30pm in the Republic of Ireland
4.30pm in Northern Ireland and Great Britain

International payees

It is not possible to make payments within one working day to all countries. However, money can be sent to payee accounts in certain other countries/currencies within one working day provided:

Payments made later than any cut-off times mentioned above will be processed on the next working day.

In total there are 36 states in the SEPA zone. Payments can be made between these states within one working day, providing they meet rules and cut-off times covered above.
