Jonathan KatzWhile this book does "work" as a standalone (I read it that way), I think the experience of reading the book would be deepened by reading the previous book(s) in the series first.
Julie Failla Earhartworks perfectly as a standalone...Strout fills in readers as she goes without being obvious
Maria McGrathI had not read the first two books, and I'm not sure whether I will, based on the references she makes, but I definitely never felt at sea. So, yes, I think it's fine as a standalone.
MonicaStand-alone. I did read My Name is Lucy Barton, and now ,Oh William has inspired me to want to read it again.
JaneNot necessary, but I think it would be helpful to read at least My Name is Lucy Barton first. I read it so long ago, I found myself wanting it for a reference to fill in some gaps I didn’t remember. It also helps to give some insight into Lucy, her past and her voice.
MaggiendpI read My Name is Lucy Barton and did not like it as much as the Olive Kitteridge books. In this book, I found it annoying when the author would write something like “I have written about that before” or “I really do not care to write more about that” So it may have been better to have read them closer together.
SarahIt will make you WANT to read all her other books. A character from The Burgess Boys features in this one as well. Love how interconnected her stories are, but that they also work alone.
Martha KleinShe "reminds" you of the things you need to know about the previous work, but this book also just makes you want to read the previous one.
SusanI asked a woman in a bookstore about Oh William and she said that people enjoyed it more if they had read the first one. I had read Lucy Barton years ago, so I reread it (and loved it all over again) before I started this one. I have not read the short story book that was published between them. I will read that next.
LynIt can be read as a stand alone. I read My Name is Lucy Barton and Anything is Possible so long ago that I forgot many of the details they provide about Lucy's journey. After finishing Oh, William I decided to reread My Name is Lucy Barton as a refresher.
