This article explains how to use WPA-PSK on NETGEAR wireless routers and access points.

WPA-PSKoffersbetter network security than WEP. Newer routers offer even stronger security protocols than WPA-PSK like WPA3and WPA2.NETGEAR recommends using WPA3 or WPA2 when they areavailable.

Note:

  • You can enable only one security protocol (WEP, WPA, etc.) per wireless network at a time.
  • You must configure your wireless clients, such as wireless computers, to use the same security protocol as the router or access point.

To enable theWPA-PSK protocol:

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to any LAN portonyourNETGEAR router or access point.
  2. In a web browser, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, enter the routeror access point's IP address in the address bar.
    The defaultIP address is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
  3. Enterthe user nameand password.
    The default user name is admin. The default password ispassword.
    NETGEAR recommends changing the default password to increase the security of your network.
  4. SelectWireless Settingsfrom theleft sidenavigation bar.
  5. Under Security Options, select WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key).
  6. InSecurity Encryption (WPA-PSK) > Passphrase, enter a passphrase.
    The passphrase must be8 to 63 characters long.
    Note: You must have the passphrase to connect to the wireless network.
  7. Click Apply.
