How do I cite an encyclopedia entry in Chicago Style? (2024)

For substantial encyclopedia entries with an author Chicago recommends the following format:

Footnote

1. Author First Name Author Last Name, “Title of Entry,” in Title of Encyclopedia, ed. Editor(s) First Name Last Name (Place of Publication: Publisher, Publication/Copyright date), page number (if provided), URL.

1. George Kurian, “Addams, Jane,” in The Encyclopedia of Political Science, ed. George Kurian (CQ Press, 2011). https://dx.doi.org/10.4135/9781608712434.

Bibliography

Author Last Name, Author First Name. “Title of Entry.” In Title of Encyclopedia, edited by Editors(s) First Name Last Name, page number range for entry (if provided). Place of Publication: Publisher, Publication/Copyright date. URL.

Kurian, George. “Addams, Jane.” In The Encyclopedia of Political Science, edited by George Kurian, CQ Press, 2011. https://dx.doi.org/10.4135/9781608712434.

For shorter entries in well known works, you should only cite them in footnotes and not the bibliography as follows:

1. Name of Reference Source (if a book like Encyclopedia Britannica put it in italics), s.v. “Title of entry,” by Author First Name Author Last Name (if it has one), accessed date, URL.
