Not accidental or awkward gaps, but intentional and controlled techniques to help you communicate more effectively. Strategic silences and pauses can capture and hold your audience's attention, signal confidence and authority, highlight key points or messages, create contrast and variety in your tone and pace, give yourself and your listeners time to think and process, avoid filler words and verbal clutter, and invite feedback and participation.

Pausing and being silent is useful in a variety of situations, especially to draw attention and/or create emphasis.It's harder to do than most people think because we humans feel uncomfortable in silence and we tend to rush to fill the silence by talking. Fight the urge and pause when appropriate. I recommend practicing in low/no risk scenarios because it will likely feel uncomfortable at first. Practicing with friends or coworkers who are in your cohort are examples of low/no risk opportunities.

In my experience, it is also helpful to pause and take a few breaths when we need to calm ourselves when rattled by a question, forget a piece of information momentarily, or need to slow our pace down in presentations. Often the pause seems longer for the speaker than the listener, so when it's used to make a point I like to give it an extra 2-3 seconds for emphasis.
