Here’s what else to consider
Choosing the most cost-effective international shipping method is a crucial decision for any import/export business. Shipping costs can vary significantly depending on the mode of transport, the destination, the weight and volume of the goods, the delivery time, and the customs requirements. In this article, you will learn how to compare different shipping options and factors to consider when making your choice.
Key takeaways from this article
-
Evaluate freight options:
Consider the full scope of freight options, like air, sea, rail, or road. Each has its pros and cons depending on your cargo's size and urgency. Find a balance between cost and speed that fits your business needs.
-

1 Air Freight
Air freight is the fastest and most reliable way to ship goods internationally, but also the most expensive. It is ideal for urgent, perishable, or high-value items that need to reach their destination in a matter of days. However, air freight also has some limitations, such as lower capacity, higher fuel surcharges, and stricter security regulations. To reduce the cost of air freight, you can use a freight forwarder, consolidate your shipments, or opt for less-than-container load (LCL) services.

2 Sea Freight
Sea freight is the most common and economical way to ship goods internationally, especially for large or bulky items. It can handle almost any type of cargo, from raw materials to finished products, and offers more flexibility in terms of routes and destinations. However, sea freight also has some drawbacks, such as longer transit times, higher risk of delays, damage, or theft, and more complex documentation and customs procedures. To optimize the cost of sea freight, you can choose the most suitable container size, negotiate the best rates with carriers, or use a free trade zone.

3 Rail Freight
Rail freight is a viable alternative to air and sea freight for some regions, such as Europe, Asia, and North America. It offers faster delivery times than sea freight, lower costs than air freight, and lower environmental impact than both. It is suitable for heavy or bulky goods that do not require urgent delivery or special handling. However, rail freight also has some challenges, such as limited network coverage, dependence on road or sea connections, and potential disruptions due to weather, strikes, or accidents. To benefit from the cost-efficiency of rail freight, you can use intermodal transport, book in advance, or leverage trade agreements.

4 Road Freight
Road freight is the most flexible and accessible way to ship goods internationally, as it can reach almost any location and accommodate various types of cargo. It is ideal for short or medium distances, small or medium volumes, and time-sensitive or fragile items. However, road freight also has some disadvantages, such as higher fuel costs, traffic congestion, tolls, and environmental impact. It also faces different regulations and standards across countries, which can affect the delivery time and cost. To minimize the cost of road freight, you can use a truckload (TL) or less-than-truckload (LTL) service, optimize your route and load, or join a green logistics program.

5 Courier Services
Courier services are specialized companies that offer express delivery of parcels or documents internationally. They are convenient, fast, and secure, and often provide tracking, insurance, and customs clearance services. They are suitable for small or lightweight items that need to be delivered urgently or safely. However, courier services are also the most expensive way to ship goods internationally, as they charge based on the weight and dimensions of the package, the destination, and the delivery time. To lower the cost of courier services, you can compare different providers, use a prepaid service, or take advantage of discounts or promotions.

Whilst FPO's (Couriers) do offer and provide a 'quick' collection & delivery service you might need to consider the potential risks regarding your goods crossing over customs boundaries as you risk losing some level of control for how your Courier conducts/transacts the customs formalities on your behalf = both, for the export and import. Giving over such controls is not for the faint hearted and "fast" doesn't always end up being fast when the customs instructions start to go wrong and your goods get delayed, or seized, or lost. many FPO's pay for the customs-costs and add these to their own account, then back-charge you (via their own Invoicing) = the IoR may lose-out on claiming back or deferring the Tax and Duty. EXPENSIVE!

One thing to consider when using the fast parcel services, is that you are going to be just a very small piece of a large puzzle and you won't necessarily get the same level of service as you would with another freight forwarder.

There are a lot of things you need to consider when planning international shipping - in some cases your timeline will dictate the need to use airfreight, while on the other hand an oversize shipment could be prohibitively expensive without using seafreight. Build a relationship with a forwarder who can offer all modes of transport and you should be good to go !
