Fairbanks North Star Borough Facts
The Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) was incorporated as second class on January 1, 1964. In Alaska, "borough" is used instead of "county." (Boroughs are similar to counties.) The FNSB includes the City of Fairbanks and the City of North Pole. Each city has its own elected Mayor and elected City Council Members.
Powers of the Fairbanks North Star Borough
FNSB has several categories of "powers" as a second-class borough. The general categories of these powers are Mandatory Areawide Powers, such as Public Schools, Assessment and Collection of Taxes, Planning, Platting, and Land Use.
Other powers include Conferred Areawide Powers, Acquired Areawide Powers, Conferred Non-Areawide Powers, Acquired Non-Areawide Powers, Powers of Some Service Areas, and Other Powers.
