CryptoPunk #5822 is getting honored in Guinness World Records’ new CryptoMania section that honors achievements of the crypto asset variety.
NFTs are finally being recognized by Guinness World Records. Specifically, CryptoPunk #5822 will be included in the iconic book’s latest edition.
Deepak Thapliyal, CEO of a blockchain infrastructure startup called Chain, bought the iconic blue Alien Punk that rocks a bandana in February for roughly $23.7 million. In the 2023 edition of the famous encyclopedia, CryptoPunk #5822 is recognized as the most expensive NFT on the market.
Guinness World Records also introduced a new section entitled “CryptoMania” to honor the growing crypto asset market, encompassing all things Web3 and digital collectibles. CryptoMania records feature historic industry events, achievements, collectibles, and more.
Bitcoin recently entered the latest edition of the Guinness book as the world’s first decentralized cryptocurrency.

The landmark sale of CryptoPunk #5822 took place right before what we came to call the crypto winter. While this sale was monumental and remains the biggest sale for CryptoPunks to date, there have been NFT sales larger than this one.
For example, “The Merge” by Pak sold for $91.8 million on Nifty Gateway in September 2021. Some experts consider the NFT a series of artworks instead of one piece since nearly 29,000 collectors bought a fraction of it, which broke down to roughly 312,600 separate NFTs.
Additionally, you won’t find Beeple’s “Everydays: the First 5000 Days” NFT featured in the renowned encyclopedia, either, even though the most expensive piece in the collection was sold for $69.3 million — this is because Guinness defines NFTs as “limited-edition sets of artwork built around pre-rendered templates.” The Beeple NFT in question features a collage of 5,000 digital images he created over time.
Web3 has recognized Beeple‘s “Everdays” NFT as the most expensive individual crypto asset sale ever, so Guinness may get some pushback on this new record. Regardless, while today may belong to CryptoPunk #5822, Beeple’s project propelled the NFT market forward in ways no other project has to date, so we won’t be surprised if it ends up in an encyclopedia or two one day soon.

The most expensive CryptoPunk of all time remains CryptoPunk #5822, which sold for 8,000 ETH worth $23.7 million on Feb. 12, 2022. According to The Block's Data Dashboard, CryptoPunks generated $7.03 million in trade volume between March 10 and March 16 and $25.52 million in sales the week before.
The most expensive NFT sold is The Merge, the NFT collection created by digital artist PAK that was sold for $91,806,516 within just 48 hours following its release on December 3, 2021, on the NFT marketplace Nifty Gateway.
The record for the highest sale still belongs to Cryptopunk #5,822, another 'Alien Punk,' fetching $23.7 million. Sporting a headband, Cryptopunk #3,100 has now been owned by three different collectors.
There are 10,000 unique CryptoPunks (6,039 male and 3,840 female). Each one was algorithmically generated through computer code and thus no two characters are exactly alike, with some traits being rarer than others.
Launched in June of 2017 by product studio Larva Labs and acquired by Yuga Labs in 2022, CryptoPunks is one of the first NFT collections ever on the Ethereum blockchain.
Each pixelated CryptoPunk is randomly generated with a unique set of accessories like hats, facial hair, glasses, earrings and more. Unlike the many other NFT collections it went on to inspire, CryptoPunks were created using the ERC-20 token standard, the same used by cryptocurrencies such as MANA and ENJ.
“Crypto Punk #5822,” also known as “Blue Bandana,” is one of nine alien Punks and one of 500 wearing a bandana. This sale holds the title of most expensive Crypto Punk ever sold, making it into this year's Guinness Book of Records.
Some of the types of NFTs that sell best include: Digital Art: High-quality digital artworks, including illustrations, animations, and digital paintings, created by renowned or emerging artists.
Beeple himself had also become a collector of NFTs from other artists, amassing a collection worth millions of dollars. Another prominent NFT collector was the entrepreneur and investor Mark Cuban, who had been an early and vocal proponent of the NFT.

The limited supply of CryptoPunks available for purchase adds to the thrill and pushes demand to the moon and beyond. The rarity of most CryptoPunks makes them highly coveted.
