GPU names are pretty complicated – and particularly unfriendly to those not 100% up to date with all the new releases, so in this video I want to give you a breakdown of what makes up both NVIDIA and AMD’s new GPU names.

Let’s start off with the big boy, NVIDIA. They have two current naming schemes, although they are pretty similar, they have “GTX” cards, and “RTX” cards, and those are currently followed by 4 numbers, for example, GTX 1660, or RTX 2080. There is also an extra bit that some cards have, just to make it a bit more complicated, and that’s “TI” or “Super”, for example, GTX 1660TI or RTX 2080 Super.

So what does that all mean? Well, lets start with GTX or RTX. GTX is their “standard” line of cards, whereas RTX cards have dedicated hardware onboard to run their “RTX” suite of features in games – namely RayTraced lighting, but also a form of anti-aliasing they call DLSS. For the average person, these features boil down to slightly nicer lighting, or reflections, or shadows in supported games, and depending on the game, a slightly crisper image or better FPS while not drastically losing image quality.

When it comes to the numbers, those tell you what generation the card is from – so the “16” in “1660”, or “20” in “2080” with the second number telling you what version of the card it is from that generation, with the higher the better, so a “1650” is lower end than a “1660”, and “2060” is lower end than a “2080”.

The TI is NVIDIA’s way of adding more levels of products beyond the specific numbers, often after the original cards are released, but more recently it has been a mainstay of their product stack. TI delineates a card that is better than the “non-TI” version, but not as good as the next number up – so a “1070TI” is better than a “1070” but not as good as a “1080”.

Super is a brand new name they’ve added to again add more product segments, it’s basically a slightly improved version of the original, so the RTX 2070 Super is better than a standard RTX 2070. And to confuse you more, some of the original ones have now been discontinued, those being the RTX 2070 and 2080 non-Super variants.

When it comes to AMD, they’ve changed around their names a fair bit in recent years, so I’ll give you a the last 3 generations or so. Starting off with the newest, the RX 5700 & RX 5700 XT, these hold a similar scheme to NVIDIA, with the first number telling you the generation, and the second telling you the model number, so the RX 5700 is a better card than an RX 5500 – and XT, much like TI, tells you it’s a faster card than the “non XT” version.

Their old product name, “VEGA” was the codename for their architecture, and so is very likely dead now, but since you can still buy the cards, I’ll explain that anyway. You’ve got 3 cards here, starting at the highest end, the Vega 7, then Vega 64 and Vega 56. The name jumps around here because the vega 7 is based on a 7nm architecture, hence the name, whereas the older vega cards had their names based on how many compute units each card had.

And finally, their oldest naming scheme that you can still buy new today is “RX 590”. This follows a more traditional naming scheme, where the “5” in “590” is the generation, and “90” is the model number, with the higher the better. These are a bit tricky still though as an RX 590 is almost the same as an RX 580, which is basically just an RX 480… still complicated. Sorry.

FAQs

GPU Names Explained – RTX, GTX, RX…? ›

RTX GPUs are produced by NVidia, RX GPUs are produced by AMD. They're fundamentally different in structure, albeit similar in performance when comparing models of similar price.

What does RX and RTX mean? ›

RTX GPUs are produced by NVidia, RX GPUs are produced by AMD. They're fundamentally different in structure, albeit similar in performance when comparing models of similar price.

What is RX vs RTX? ›

GeForce RTX provides DLSS for upscaling, and RTX for ray tracing. On the other hand, Radeon RX provides FSR for upscaling, and they also provide ray tracing for their users. NVIDIA's cards give better performance when ray tracing is turned on, unlike AMD's, which falls behind with a bigger difference.

What is higher GTX or RTX? ›

While GTX GPUs can provide decent performance for certain data science tasks, RTX GPUs are better equipped to handle the demands of modern AI and deep learning workloads. Their enhanced compute capabilities, larger VRAM options, and improved compatibility make them the preferred choice for many data scientists.

What is the difference between GTX and RX? ›

Well they are quite different and simple to understand……. Nvidia has the GTX series which is basically tailored for gaming and streaming. Amd has the RX series which is also for gaming and streaming. Nvidia uses different architectures like Maxwell , Pascal etc known for its efficiency but they are costly.

What does the XT stand for AMD? ›

It stands for extreme. It's a callback to when ATI also used the same names for some of their Radeon products, including Pro, XT, XT PE (Platinum Edition), LE (I imagine Light/Lite Edition).

Is GTX better than RTX for gaming? ›

It depends on exactly which card, e.g. the best GTX series cards such as the 1080Ti will outperform the RTX 2060. But generally yes RTX is better, each RTX card will outperform it's GTX counterpart significantly. RTX cards are also newer, so they have more up to date architecture and can support real time raytracing.

What does GTX stand for in NVIDIA? ›

GTX stands for "Giga Texel Shader eXtreme" and is a type of graphics processing unit (GPU) produced by NVIDIA.

Which is better, RTX 3080 or rx 6800xt? ›

RTX 3080 has a lead with some ray tracing settings in some games, but some of those settings also need more memory then it's VRAM, and leads to lower minimum framerates compared to the RX 6800 XT. In pure rasterization, RX 6800 XT can be very slightly faster on average.

What are the three types of GPU? ›

GPUs come in two basic types: integrated and discrete. An integrated GPU does not come on its own separate card at all and is instead embedded alongside the CPU. A discrete GPU is a distinct chip that is mounted on its own circuit board and is typically attached to a PCI Express slot.

What are NVIDIA GPUs called? ›

GeForce is a brand of graphics processing units (GPUs) designed by Nvidia and marketed for the performance market. As of the GeForce 40 series, there have been eighteen iterations of the design.

What does RTX stand for? ›

The full form of RTX is known as Ray Tracing Texel eXtreme. The RTX cards provide real-time ray tracing to make the video look more beautiful. It is a variant of the GeForce, announced in 2018.

Is the GTX discontinued? ›

It feels like it's been a long time coming, but Nvidia has finally discontinued its last remaining GeForce GTX graphics card range.

Which is better GTX or GeForce? ›

The main difference between them is the performance level. Nvidia GeForce cards are usually the more affordable option and are designed for casual gamers, while Nvidia GTX cards are more powerful and are designed for enthusiast gamers.

Is gtx 1650 better than RTX 3050? ›

RTX 3050 is about 30% faster than GTX 1650 and supports latest technologies like RTX voice, DLSS, raytracing etc. So RTX 3050 is better.

What does RX stand for graphics? ›

Radeon RX series, a series of graphics products in the AMD Radeon 400 series. Reactive extensions, originally for .NET, later ported to other languages and environments. Rx bridge, a device for measuring the characteristic resistance and impedance of antenna or feedline system.

What is RTX? ›

In addition to ray tracing, RTX includes artificial intelligence integration, common asset formats, rasterization (CUDA) support, and simulation APIs. The components of RTX are: AI-accelerated features (NGX) Asset formats (USD and MDL) Rasterization including advanced shaders.
