Gold & Silver Libertads - Key Dates & Varieties | APMEX (1)

One of the most popular bullion coins today are the Mexican Gold & Silver Libertads. The coins are very popular due to both their low mintages and beloved design.

The design of the Libertad is very attractive to many people. The obverse depicts the Coat of Arms of Mexico, which is a Mexican Golden Eagle with a rattlesnake in its mouth. The eagle is perched on a cactus plant. Oak leaves and laurel leaves encircle the eagle. Surrounding the eagle are various versions of Mexico’s Coats of Arms.

The reverse design portrays the Winged Victoria (the “Angel of Independence”) with two volcanoes in the background. From 1982 to 1995, the Silver Libertads used a front-facing angel. In 1996, the design was slightly changed to an angel with a ¾ side profile.
