History[]
In the Greek Era of the God of War series, at least one deity had some sort of evil intent, whether it be to destroy the world because of their lonely misery, or kill the mortal Kratos who is haunted by the painful loss of his whole family. They first appeared as the main allies of Kratos, granting him powerful magics and weapons throughout his journey. After the death of Callisto and Deimos and followed by Zeus' treachery, Kratos allies with Titans to obtain revenge against Zeus and the Gods who betrayed him, declaring war on the rest of Olympus as well.
Gods can sustain damages that would instantly kill a mortal and their lifetime is virtually infinite, but their existence can still be ended using divine weapons like the Blade of Olympus. Also the power of Hope, acquired by Kratos when he opened the Pandora Box, grants the ability to destroy a god. When a god ceases to exist, a catastrophic event based on what the deity personified occurs.
At the end of God of War II Kratos swears vengeance against the Olympus after he is betrayed by Zeus, starting a war against the gods with the help of the Titans. During the events of God of War III, all the major gods and goddesses end up being destroyed by Kratos, who finally fulfills his vengeance. Kratos' actions indirectly caused the complete annihilation of the Greek Pantheon, since the few deities left alive from his genocidal rampage were either killed by the Titans or perished in the ensuing Chaos. Greece was also completely devastated by the various cataclysms caused by the death of the gods.
Athena seems the to be the only greek goddess who has not ceased to exist, since after she was killed by Kratos she ascended to the astral form, keeping a fragile form of life.
Known Gods of Olympus[]
Many of the gods are indistinguishable from humans in appearance, although some gods do look extremely different façade wise. When a God dies, a cataclysm is unleashed that is sometimes called a plague. The plague is based on what the god personifies like deluge (Poseidon the water god), swarms of pests (Hermes), the sun being blocked out by the clouds in the sky (Helios being the sun god), and the souls of the dead escaping (Hades who rules the Underworld). The weaker gods such as Ceryx, however, die without any major consequences. (it is possible that these events are not major enough to warrant much attention)
