Gemalto will provide e-SIMs for windows 10 devices.
Digital security company Gemalto says the first wave of Windows 10 devices incorporating its eSIM technology is expected from June this year.
eSIM, also called soft SIM or embedded SIM, integrates a SIM chip within devices, allowing them to be a single unit. The SIM is no longer removable, it is programmable and enables users to switch between telecoms carriers.
Gemalto partnered with Microsoft last month in a deal to provide its eSIM technology and On Demand Connectivity to Windows 10 users.
Microsoft has been investing in both 5G and eSIM technology as part of its move to the Internet of things (IOT). "eSIM technology remains an important investment for Microsoft as we look to create even more mobile computing opportunities," says Roanne Sones, general manager, strategy and ecosystem for windows and devices at Microsoft. Sones says eSIMs are "a key component of an always connected Windows experience".
Jeremy Osborne, regional marketing manager at Gemalto Africa, says a growing number of devices, such as watches, tablets, cars and telemetry units need to be connected to mobile networks.
He said the first wave of Windows 10 devices with this technology is expected to be available to consumers between June and August 2017.
Gemalto believes eSIM devices will create a framework for manufacturers to connect to operator networks. Its remote SIM provisioning standards are compliant with the latest specifications and guidelines from the GSM Association, which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide.
