Fan Guide (2024)

FAQs

What is the best case fan configuration? ›

Generally, you want the case fans in front of the case drawing in air while the fans at the rear blow air out. If your case has vents at the top, they should be placed as exhaust fans because hot air will rise. Side-mounted fans should be used for intake, though they often don't have air filters.

Is it better to have more intake or exhaust fans? ›

(This setup usually results in more dust entering your PC, which you can mitigate with dust filters or more frequent cleaning.) How do you achieve positive airflow? Easy: Just have more intake than exhaust fans, or run your intake fans slightly faster than your exhaust if they're in equal number.

What's better, a pusher or puller fan? ›

Always choose a puller fan but if space is an issue then use a pusher fan. When it comes to diameter, you should get a fan that covers as much of the radiator core as possible. Measure the area with the existing fan and shroud removed to find out how much room you have to work with.

How many fans should a PC have? ›

A minimum of 2 intake fans help cool components efficiently and maintain positive air pressure. At least one exhaust fan is essential to push hot air out of the case. Don't forget to count CPU cooler fans when balancing your intake and exhaust fans.

Should case fans be at 100%? ›

If your CPU is getting too hot, most fans will automatically adjust to a reasonable speed. Keeping the fan at 100% speed all the time would just create annoying noise, use a bit more electricity, and wear down the fans at a faster rate. The cooler temperature may slightly increase the life span of your CPU.

Is pressure or airflow better for case fans? ›

Each type of fan has its strengths, and the choice between them often comes down to the specifics of your PC setup. Static pressure fans excel in cooling system components that have tight fins or require air to be pushed with force, whereas airflow fans are champions of open regions and overall case ventilation.

Does more fans mean better airflow? ›

More fans will increase airflow, but will also pull in more dust from the outside, which over time, can block your heatsinks.

Should a window fan be on intake or exhaust? ›

You can have fans blowing out of the windows on the upper level to exhaust the warm air trapped there, says Chris Regan, an engineer and CR tester of AC units. And when the outside temperature starts to drop, you can pair that with fans blowing inward in shadier rooms to maximize the airflow in your home.

Should I get a cold air intake or exhaust? ›

If you've got a tight budget and care more about providing cooler air to your engine so it can breathe easier, go with an aftermarket cold air intake first. If your budget is less restrictive and you're more concerned with gaining extra power, aggressive sound and killer looks, install an exhaust system first.

How many CFM do I need to cool a v8? ›

Consider the following minimum cubic feet per minute (CFM) ratings for basic engines: 1,250 CFM for a 4-cylinder. 2,000 CFM for a 6-cylinder. 2,500 CFM for a 8-cylinder.

Should top fan push or pull? ›

Virtually all fans will flow better pushing air into a restriction than trying to pull air out through a restriction.

What is the most efficient fan shape? ›

The highest-efficiency centrifugal fans use airfoil or backward-curved impeller blades (figure 2).

Do you need both intake and exhaust fans? ›

Ideally, your ventilation system will incorporate both varieties working in tandem — replenishing that removed air quickly to avoid a negative pressure situation.

What is the best airflow for a PC? ›

Generally, the goal of positioning fans in a PC case is to create an airflow channel from the right side/front of your case to the upper left/rear. This channel should bring cool air across the CPU, GPU and other heat sensitive components and then exhaust out of the back and/or top.

What is the most optimal fan design? ›

The highest-efficiency centrifugal fans use airfoil or backward-curved impeller blades (figure 2). Airfoil blades are curved backward and have an airfoil shape (similar to a cross section of an airplane wing), while backward-curved blades are of a single thickness of metal.

What should I set my case fans to? ›

Generally, the goal of positioning fans in a PC case is to create an airflow channel from the right side/front of your case to the upper left/rear. This channel should bring cool air across the CPU, GPU and other heat sensitive components and then exhaust out of the back and/or top.

What is the best airflow for a fan? ›

Airflow Efficiency

On high speed: Good CFM ranges from 4,000 to 5,000. Better ranges from 5,000 to 6,000. Best is over 6,000.

Should I set my case fans to PWM or DC? ›

PWM case fans have an advantage over DC case fans in terms of airflow, as they can spin faster when the system is hot and generate more airflow. DC case fans, on the other hand, have a disadvantage in terms of airflow, as they can't spin very fast and generate less airflow.
