About this event

Bringing People, Process, Policy and Partners together to build a cyber risk aware culture.

Technology controls are an important pilar of any cyber security strategy, whether it be small to medium businesses, larger organisations or government agencies. Technology tools can assist to protect and detect against cyber threats, and yet people are often the first line of defence. 40% of cyber attacks start with a phishing event and it is therefore imperative that people are equipped with the knowledge to become more cyber security risk aware.

Join our panel of experts to discuss how People, Process and Policy can go a long way to build cyber resiliency, and how trusted Partners can assist Cyber Security teams to implement strategies quicker.

Chief Security Officer, nbn

Darren Kane has been the Chief Security Officer at nbn™ since 2015. Under his leadership, the nbn Security Group has become a converged centre of physical and cyber security enabling Australia’s biggest critical infrastructure owner to better protect its people and assets against evolving threats.

Prior to nbn™, Darren served in Federal Government Law Enforcement Agencies for over 19 years in the Australian Federal Police and financial markets regulator the Australian Securities & Investment Commission, and 11 years at Telstra Corporation in varied security management roles culminating in 5 years as the Director, Corporate Security & Investigations.

Darren was appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the School of Information Technology, Faculty of Science, at Deakin University in 2020. Darren has a Master’s in Business Administration, a Diploma of Financial Markets and is a Graduate Australian Institute of Company Directors.

In 2020 Darren was awarded Male Champion of Change at the AWSNA (Australian Women’s Security Network Awards).

Jan Zeilinga is a seasoned cybersecurity professional with over 20 years of distinguished experience. As the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at JCU, Jan is responsible for leading strategic cybersecurity efforts, setting the overall direction for the security of digital assets.

Before his role at JCU, Jan demonstrated his entrepreneurial flair and deep cybersecurity knowledge by founding First Point Global, a cybersecurity company specialising in innovative security solutions. Under his strategic leadership, First Point Global thrived and garnered a robust client portfolio. The company's success caught the attention of global giant KPMG, which acquired it in 2015, a testament to Jan's vision and business acumen.

This successful journey at First Point Global underscored Jan's capability to create, manage, and sell a high-performing cybersecurity company, demonstrating his proficiency in technical aspects of cybersecurity and key areas of business and management.

Aside from his professional commitments and impressive professional achievements, Jan has always nurtured a profound passion for developing the next generation of cybersecurity leaders. His commitment to this mission led him to become a mentor and lecturer, guiding students through intensive cybersecurity boot camps. Jan's dedication to nurturing talent ultimately drew him to the academic sphere, joining JCU as CISO.

Community Engagement Manager, nbn

Casie is a communications, stakeholder engagement and advocacy specialist who is passionate about regional Queensland. She is an award-winning broadcast journalist, skilled producer and content writer with extensive experience in radio and television news presentation and production.

Having worked for many Government Ministers in Queensland and the Northern Territory, Casie has a strong track record in crisis management and government and media relations. She has also worked in the private sector and helped found a communications, stakeholder engagement and advocacy agency where she worked on major projects.
Casie has been the nbn Local lead in North Queensland for two and a half years, where she gets to fulfill her passion of advocating for the north-west region.

She has a Bachelor of Journalism from James Cook University, has completed IAP2 Australasia's Certificate in Engagement and is also a Royal Australian Air Force Specialist Reservist Public Affairs Officer.

Fiona has over 20 years’ management experience leading multiple teams, developing and implementing business strategies, delivering solutions and leading and managing change.

She has a strong blend of strategic, managerial, operational and corporate governance experience gained from working in the banking/finance, not-for-profit sector and most recently as Chief Operating Officer for PVW Partners.

Over the past 5 years, Fiona has assisted PVW Partners more than double in size utilising her strong management and organisational planning knowledge and experience with the firm now having a physical presence in Townsville, Innisfail, Cairns and Darwin.

Fiona holds a Bachelor of Business, Master of Business Administration and is a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders Australia + New Zealand.

Registration

  • Payment in full is required the time of booking in order for the registration to be valid.
  • To avoid disappointment, ensure you pay for your booking(s) before the registration closing date. Anyone that has not received a confirmation email will not be on the event attendance list and therefore will not be admitted to the event.
  • Online registration ends at the time stated on the event registration page.

Cancellation and Refund

All cancellations must be processed through the website, a refund will only be considered if it is at least 3 working days prior to the event.

  • All dietary requirements are considered, however we cannot guarantee a 100% allergen free environment.
  • ACS reserves the right to prohibit entry or eject any person from an ACS event based on behaviour deemed inappropriate by ACS staff, its agents and/or others working under its authority.
  • Filming or streaming by attendees is not permitted. If an attendee is found to be doing so they will be asked to leave the event immediately and further action may be taken.

COVID-19 Event Attendance Compliance

By registeringto attend an ACS in person event you are agreeing to the below terms and conditions

  • If an attendee is displaying flu or cold like symptoms in the days leading up to the event and therefore is not able to attend, ACS will refund the registration fee.
  • If an attendee comes to an event and is displaying flu or cold like symptoms they will be asked to leave
  • We ask all ACS members to respect the social distancing guidelines, if an attendee repeatedly disregards these guidelines, they may be asked to leave
  • ACS reserves the right to cancel the event within 24 hours' notice if either the speaker or the event host has advised us that they are exhibiting flu or cold like symptoms
  • All attendees must provide a valid phone number and email address to be contacted on if there is reason to notify about a possible COVID-19 exposure
