    Most of my clients use intent data.Here are some words of caution...I love tools and tech.But it has to be used the right way to work.There are some unique challenges and behaviors that come from using 3rd party intent data:1️⃣ You have little competitive advantageIf you’re monitoring the same signals as everyone else in your field, you’re now competing for the same attention from the same people at the same time.↳ Is there anything logical that precedes the intent you’re looking for? Look for those signals instead and you’ll have 3-9 mo head start.2️⃣ Intent data cannot replace business acumenIntent shows what companies are looking at at the moment, but it doesn’t piece it together for you just yet. What does it mean if a customer is searching for 3 different solutions at the same time? Would they be competing priorities? Is one prerequisite for another?↳ Know your customers business so well you know what stage in a particular life cycle they are, and you've set yourself apart from just about everyone else.3️⃣ It doesn’t build trustIntent is part of the GTM tool kit, but you still have to overcome the trust gap when reaching out cold.↳ Create more intent signals based on 1st party data (e.g. visiting a certain page on your website, or adding more users to a trial)In the end, intent data is often a reactive approach unless used right.How are you using intent tools today?P.S. I do a lot of research for my clients, so I end up on a lot of intent lists. My inbox hates me for it!

    Insights that your audience can't get from any other company or competitor come from two types of original data:Quant and QualFurther simplified, behaviors and beliefs.Since people are known to say one thing and act differently, a well-rounded research report explores both.Pulling from two primary data sources:1️⃣ 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 (𝐕𝐨𝐂): Gather your audience's experiences in their own words. In practice, this could translate to surveys with a mix of multiple-choice and short answers or long-form questions. Focus on capturing testimonials or detailed explanations of their opinions.2️⃣ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚: Usage data from your platform is the gold standard for original research because your audience literally couldn't find it anywhere else. Behavior data is also inherently unbiased, which — when combined with VoC insights — helps paint a complete picture of customer sentiment.Zero-party data (i.e. info people share voluntarily) + first-party data (i.e. data that comes from channels you own) = the perfect data co*cktail. 🍸 P.S.     I talk to a lot of Marketers - particularly a lot of Digital Marketers - every week. I would say that almost all of them believe their data sets are satisfactory. "We have entire teams dedicated to providing us good data sets" or, "We've been doing this for a long time - we know our targets" is generally what I hear. The problem is not that they can't find other viable datasets. In fact, they're doing their best with what they've got. It's that they aren't aware that other datasets exist. Tarci updates its dataset weekly, providing firmographics, growth signals, decline signals, material change updates, hiring trend updates, change in decision-maker, contact data - even needs-based triggers - on over 33 million SMBs in the US. I'll send a sample dataset to anyone interested! 🥂
