China is the most important trading partner of the European Union: In 2023, the EU and China traded goods worth € 739 bn (imports and exports). This represents 15% of all EU trade in goods. The share of the United States amounted to approximately 17%. Compared to 2000, the proportion of trade with the United States has decreased significantly, whereas China’s share of EU trade has nearly tripled from 5% to 15%.

Other major trading partners of the EU27 were the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey. Trade with Japan has decreased since 2000 – dropping from 6% to just 3% in 2023.

Analysing the import and export flows separately, the two largest trading partners show differences: In 2023, China was the most important EU import trade partner (20%), followed by the United States (14%). On the other hand, the United States was the most common destination for goods exported from the EU (20%), with the United Kingdom ranked second (13%) and China ranked third (9%).
