To help mitigate these hazards, the Rahway Fire Department has provided the following tips to assist e-bike and e-scooter owners to properly take care of their devices.
1. Avoid overcharging your e-bike or e-scooter: Overcharging can damage the battery and lead to overheating, which increases the risk of a fire incident. Once the battery is fully charged, unplug the device to avoid any potential issues.
2. Perform regular maintenance checks: Regular maintenance checks are essential to identify and address potential safety hazards. Take the time to inspect your device for any signs of damage, especially around the battery and charging port. Look for loose connections, frayed wires, or any other abnormalities. Additionally, clean your e-bike or e-scooter regularly to remove any debris that could cause wear and tear over time.
3. Properly store your e-bike or e-scooter when not in use:Proper storage is crucial for fire prevention. When your e-bike or e-scooter is not in use, store it in a well-ventilated area. Remove the battery, and ensure that devices are stored away from flammable materials, and do not store your device near heat sources or in direct sunlight, as excessive heat increases the risk of fire.
4. Do not leave your device charging overnight: Leaving your electric bike or electric scooter plugged in for extended periods of time, such as overnight charging, can degrade the lithium-ion battery, leading to the risk of a malfunction that could result in a fire incident.
5. Take your device to a professional for repair: If you encounter any issues or suspect a problem with your e-bike or e-scooter, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Take your device to a professional technician or contact the manufacturer for guidance. Only use equipment provided by the device manufacturer and never replace damaged equipment with third party items.
