Edric Blight (2024)

Hey, Mittens! Mom says stop forgetting your lunch. And stop being a jerk to your friend.

—Edric to Amity, "Lost in Language"

Appearance[]

Body[]

Edric has a similar appearance to that of his sister, Emira, as they are twins. He has pale skin, pointed ears, golden eyes, thick black eyebrows, short, emerald-green hair, and a mole under his right eye.

In "Reaching Out", it is revealed that both Edric and Emira use a concealment stone to hide their true appearances. Without his concealment stone, Edric's overall appearance becomes more unkempt, having pulled-back hair, the thin beginnings of a mustache, and visible leg hairs. At some point after taking shelter at Hexside, he trimmed his mustache.

As of the epilogue of "Watching and Dreaming", Edric is now taller, has grown stubble on his chin, and his hair is now shaggier.

Clothing[]

Edric initially wears the illusion track school uniform, which consists of a light blue shirt and pants covered by a gray tunic and a small darker gray cowl over it. He also sports gray boots and his pants were baggy in Season 1. In "Labyrinth Runners", due to his enrollment in the illusion, potions, and beast keeping tracks, his sleeves are now orange and yellow.

Out of school, he wears a dark gray long-sleeved tunic tucked in his gray pants, a sleeveless burgundy shirt with a belt around the waist, and gray boots with burgundy cuffs.

Without his teardrop-shaped concealment stone tucked under his sleeve on his wrist, he wears a yellow t-shirt with a campfire on it, gray sweatpants, and brown flat loafers. He also wears a set of black-rimmed glasses and a black headband.

After taking shelter at Hexside, Edric stops using his concealment stone as well as his hairband, keeping his glasses in place, which have since become cracked, and is covered in a full-bodied cast with a metal neck brace as well as other braces to hold his arms in place.

In the epilogue, Edric now wears a dark amber jacket with a brown waist belt holding two potion bottles and a tie with a diamond: his right sleeve is rolled up and his left is light blue with fur on the upper arm. He also wears black pants, brown furry boots, and round gold-rimmed glasses with a cracked right lens.

Personality[]

Edric is an easy-going and friendly boy, but he has been shown to be quite a nasty prankster along with his twin sister, Emira. This is because he enjoys having fun. He is also quite rebellious, refusing to attend classes and preferring to skip them instead. He and Emira enjoy embarrassing their younger sister, Amity, due to her standoffish demeanor. However, despite this, he and Emira do seem to genuinely care about her, as Amity mentioned that they've been extra protective and nice towards her to make up for the "library incident" in "Lost in Language". Ever since then, Edric and Emira have had a much better relationship with Amity, helping her rescue Luz and giving her advice when she talked about her crush on the latter.

Though initially antagonistic towards his younger sister, Edric seems to bear no ill will towards Luz for attempting to thwart his and Emira's plans to embarrass Amity. He even displays something of a fondness for her, winking at her when they first met. Compared to his sisters, Edric is very melodramatic, as he is quick to panic over adversity and danger. He is also prone to get emotionally attached, such as when he wanted to adopt a bat that he wanted to try eating at first, until Emira stopped him from eating it.

This extends towards Emira to the point of dependency, as he despairs over the idea of parting with Emira forever (a sentiment that the more autonomous Emira does not share). Edric is also slightly dim-witted at times, often refusing to listen to Emira or making his own situations worse.

Edric is somewhat insecure. He is very self-conscious about his appearance, relying on his concealment stone to hide his true appearance. He also feels like whenever he tries to help, he ends up ruining things instead. However, in "Reaching Out", when he demonstrates how proficient he is at not only illusion magic, but beast keeping and potion magic as well, Edric proves to be a very useful and powerful ally. This boosted his self-esteem and gave him the confidence to pursue multi-track opportunities.

Background[]

Early life[]

Edric Blight was born to the Blight family as the second child, shortly after his twin sister. From a young age, Edric and Emira were witches of incredible talent and boasted a seemingly perfect reputation. However, the youngest Blight, Amity, knew that her older siblings had a penchant for trouble and often tattled on the two. At some point during their early teen years, Edric and Emira scored high scores on Hexside's placement exam and were enrolled into the illusion track.[3]

Making amends with Amity[]

Edric Blight (1)

After witnessing Amity reject Luz's offer of friendship with Emira, she and Edric take the opportunity to humiliate their sister by calling her "Mittens" while delivering her lunch. The twins introduce themselves to Luz as Amity's "more fun" older siblings and spend the day with her messing around the Bonesborough Library until Amity has them kicked out. The three return that night to experience the effects of the Wailing Star. After having fun watching books come to life, Edric and Emira reveal that they want to find Amity's hidden room at the library to find her diary, then humiliate her for getting them in trouble. Once Luz finds it, the human is reluctant to hand it over, and they fight Luz for the diary. As Luz cleans up the fallen pages, Amity walks in and berates the three, especially Luz, before leaving. Edric and Emira leave before Amity and Luz are almost sewed into a book by a mutated Otabin that they created but wait outside for their younger sister in order to take her home that night.[3]

Edric Blight (2)

Following the "library incident", Edric and Emira become much kinder to Amity, though their antics still annoy the younger Blight. They take her to the Knee to teach her a fire spell and run into Luz and her mentor, Eda Clawthorne. Edric and Emira reveal that their sister still needs a training wand to learn spells. Later, when Edric tries to befriend a bat that his sisters warn him against, Luz steals the training wand while they are distracted and inadvertently injures a Slitherbeast. The Blight twins and Eda attempt to fight the beast but end up getting captured and taken into its lair, and Amity locks Luz in a magic cage for her own protection. However, Luz escapes by learning her second glyph, the ice glyph, and she meets back up with Amity inside the Slitherbeast's cave. While Amity frees the twins and Eda by mastering the fire spell, Luz uses an ice glyph to subdue the Slitherbeast. Once Eda puts the Slitherbeast to sleep, she and Luz part ways with the Blight siblings.[4]

Later, at Amity's request, Edric and Emira help Luz train to fight Grom.[5]

Helping Amity[]

Edric Blight (3)

Edric and Emira greet investors at a Blight Industries demonstration, occasionally putting a "Hex me" sign on some. Later, the twins help Amity, Willow, and Gus sneak into the expo to save Luz; however, they put "Hex me" signs on their cloaks as a small prank, which causes Amity to throw the signs back at Edric.[6]

Edric Blight (4)

Shortly after, Emira helps Edric prepare for his date at the library. They run into Luz and, after seeing the romantic tension between her and Amity, Emira lies about her brother having acne and drags him away. After Amity returns home upon being fired from her job at the library, Edric and his twin listen to their younger sister lament on her feelings whenever she is around Luz. They then dye Amity's hair purple at her request but beg her to not tell their mother.[7]

When the Coven Day Parade happens, Edric supplies King with fireworks as part of a disruptive scheme.[8]

Bonesborough Brawl[]

Edric Blight (5)

After their father forces Amity to try out for the Emperor's Coven, Edric and Emira donate their concealment stones, albeit very reluctantly on Edric's behalf, to their younger sister so that she can compete in the Bonesborough Brawl. Once his sisters and Luz brush him aside when he tries to help, Edric ends up finding Eda and King, who are making a Blabber Serum to pry Warden Wrath for information on Raine Whispers. Edric reveals his knowledge of beast keeping magic and strengthens a rope for Eda and King, and impressed, they allow him to gather ingredients.

Edric Blight (6)

As they mix the potion, Eda goes to get more wood for the fire but when Wrath is incapacitated by Alador, Edric rushes the completion of the potion by using fire bee honey, not realizing this is a potion ingredient in and of itself. When he feeds the potion to Wrath, he mutates and causes havoc in an uncontrollable rampage. Eda returns, and upon seeing the damage caused, she berates Edric for altering the Blabber Serum recipe. To revert the Warden back, the Blight twin suggests exposing him to extreme cold since heat changed the recipe. He watches as his father and Amity restrain Wrath while Eda and Luz drop ice and snow on him. Once Eda gets as much information as she can out of Wrath, Edric apologizes for causing the mess, but Eda congratulates him on his knowledge of multiple tracks and says that he has a future in wild magic.[9]

Resisting the Emperor's Coven[]

Edric Blight (7)

Shortly afterwards, Edric enrolls in the potion and beast keeping tracks alongside his current enrollment in the illusion track. However, Head Illusionist Adrian Graye Vernworth comes to Hexside and informs the students of Belos' new decree - all young witches must be in a coven before the Day of Unity. Despite this notion, Adrian claims that he only wants to put temporary fake sigils on the students. Edric is selected to be part of a demonstration, but Gus realizes that he is about to be branded for real and dispels the illusion. Principal Bump and a teacher shield the Blight before Adrian reveals that he brought Coven Scouts with him. As the Head Witch is about to brand Gus with an Abomination Coven sigil, Gus creates a school-wide illusion and Edric, the students, and the faculty flee.

Edric Blight (8)

Edric, Emira, and the illusion teacher go around the school with Bump finding students and bringing them to the healing homeroom. After Hunter is brought in, Edric and the others are untrusting of the former Golden Guard before Willow convinces them to trust him per his demonstration of a breathing technique she remembers. Edric joins the staff and students of Hexside in taking on the Emperor's Coven, with him and Barcus throwing potions at the Coven Scouts. Once Gus is freed, they watch as the Emperor's Coven leaves with a vegetative Adrian and listen as Hunter reveals the truth about the Day of Unity.[10]

Edric Blight (9)

After learning about the Draining Spell, Edric and his sisters try to warn their parents about it, unaware that their mother already knows and does not care about the harm it will cause. Odalia finds them and grounds the siblings after Edric and Emira try to burn down the factory. They are later freed by Luz and her friends, but he and Emira are caught and get grounded again.[11] However, the twins manage to escape but they are soon cornered by the Collector's spies. They flee and Edric falls down an empty well and breaks every bone in his body on the rocks at the bottom. They then seek shelter at Hexside.

Hiding from the Collector[]

Edric Blight (10)

During the twins' time at Hexside, both he and his sister stopped using their concealment stones. A few months after the Day of Unity, Edric is being treated for injuries when he learns Amity has returned. He hobbles over to his younger sister and, despite his arms being in casts, he snaps them just so he could hug Amity, with Emira joining in soon after. As Amity and her friends speak with Boscha, he is dragged away by the kindergartners.

Later, after Belos is defeated, Edric and the others celebrate the return of Bump, Amelia, and Cat, with Boscha knocking him to the ground to greet her friends.

Epilogue[]

Edric Blight (11)

At some point after Belos was destroyed, Edric and his sisters severed all connections with Odalia following her and Alador's divorce.[12] During the next four years, Edric would graduate from Hexside before taking up a teaching position at the newly constructed University of Wild Magic under Eda's mentorship, with Batric serving as an assistant during his classes.

Edric Blight (12)

On the day of Luz's 18th birthday, Edric was teaching a class on illusion magic at the university. During the session, Edric used illusion magic to make Batric instantly appear from seemingly nowhere, though this humorously led to the small bat demon colliding into Edric's face when it flew in the opposite direction. Later that night, Edric joined his family in attending Luz's belated quinceañera, joyfully surprising her alongside Emira and their father upon her arrival. Shortly afterward, Edric joined the other attendees in watching the special light spectacle held by the briefly visiting Collector, with him and Emira holding their arms together as everyone waved goodbye to the star child as they departed back to the stars.

Relationships[]

Odalia Blight[]

Edric Blight (13)

While they are rarely seen directly interacting, Edric seems to have a somewhat strained relationship with his mother. Though she isn't as strict with him and Emira as she is with Amity and often excuses them often getting into trouble, Edric has confided that he doesn't feel his parents take him seriously. In addition, though he often assists his mother, such as her sending him and his sister to bring Amity her bag and helping at the Blight Industries Expo, he isn't entirely loyal to her. On occasion: he and Emira will secretly help their younger sibling and her friends against Odalia's interests, such as helping Amity, Gus, and Willow to rescue Luz at the Blight Industries Expo. Like Emira, it is also shown that Edric fears the thought of getting in trouble with Odalia, as the two would tell Amity not to inform their mother that they were involved in their younger sister's decisions to defy her orders.

In "Clouds on the Horizon", Edric and Odalia's relationship comes to a head when he and Emira join Amity and her friends in attempting to sabotage Odalia's efforts to help Belos on the Day of Unity, first by attempting to burn down her Abomaton factory and later by attempting to steal Kikimora's airship. Unfortunately, both attempts end in failure and result in him and Emira being grounded by their mother. During this time, it seems that Edric is aware of his mother's apathetic nature; unlike Amity, who initially desired to warn and reason with their mother about the Day of Unity, Edric plainly guessed that Odalia wouldn't care about believing Amity at all.

By the end of "Watching and Dreaming", in the four years since Belos' defeat, Edric, like his father and sisters, has severed ties with Odalia due to her selfish, apathetic nature, now living separately from her in the wake of his parents' divorce.[12]

Alador Blight[]

Edric Blight (14)

Like Odalia, Edric does not interact with Alador often, although it is somewhat strained due to Alador focusing on his work at their family's company. In "Reaching Out", Edric implies that his parents don't take him seriously. Like Emira, Edric is less intimidated by Alador compared to their mother and is unafraid of speaking out against him when he disapproves of any of his father's actions, as was seen with him being frustrated with Alador when he refuses to let Amity help him pin down Warden Wrath. However, following Alador's conversation with Amity after this incident, Alador came to realize the damage his neglect had caused to his relationships with his children, including Edric, and since then vowed to be a better father by spending more time with them.

Over the next four years since Belos' final defeat and his parents' divorce, Edric's relationship with Alador would greatly improve, with them having spent more time together, and developing a much closer father-son bond. On the night of Luz's belated quinceañera, Edric, with Emira, attended the party alongside his father, with them having remained beside each other throughout the celebrations.

Emira Blight[]

Edric Blight (15)

Edric shares a very close brother-sister relationship with Emira. However, while Edric's greatest fear is loneliness, Emira's greatest fear is to be stuck with him forever; this could imply that Edric cares more about Emira than she cares about him. Regardless, Emira is still shown to care about Edric, often giving him advice and showing support for him when he pursued multi-track.

Amity Blight[]

Edric Blight (16)

Edric is Amity's older brother. Due to their contrasting personalities, Amity is often embarrassed, annoyed, or angered by her siblings' mischievous antics; she finds it unfair that her parents are less harsh on her siblings in comparison to herself. Amity would often lecture Emira and Edric and tell them to go away, even reporting them to the principal for being late to class. After their attempt at pranking their younger sister nearly killed her, Edric and Emira started treating Amity better, as seen in "Adventures in the Elements". Amity also cares about her brother and sister who assist her in learning a new spell, (while Edric sometimes pulls harmless pranks on Amity), and she rushes to save them from a beast that takes them away from her. Ever since, Edric and Emira have had a closer bond with their younger sister.

After Amity returns to the Demon Realm, Edric joyously hobbles over to her to hug his younger sister with his broken arms.

Luz Noceda[]

Edric Blight (17)

Like Emira, Edric took an immediate liking to Luz after hearing how she embarrassed Amity at both school and the annual covention. When they first met Luz in "Lost in Language" at the Bonesborough Library, Edric was quick to befriend the young human and defend her from Amity's rudeness, before inviting her to join them in their pranks around the library. Though Luz was opposed to his and Emira's attempts to expose Amity's diary, neither showed any resentment towards her for trying to stop them, instead continuing to view her as a good friend. In addition, unlike his mother and younger sister (at first), Edric doesn't look down on Luz for being human and instead holds her in high regard. In "Adventures in the Elements", unlike Amity, who worried about Luz's chances of being accepted into Hexside, Edric showed complete confidence in her abilities to pass the school's entrance requirements.

Because of their friendship with Luz, Edric and his sister have occasionally aided Luz in her adventures in the Demon Realm, such as helping her train for her fight with Grom and secretly helping Amity, Willow, and Gus to rescue her from their mother at the Blight Industries expo. Despite this, Edric and Emira enjoy teasing and pranking Luz from time to time, though their intentions are never mean-spirited. Additionally, like Emira, Edric is extremely supportive of Amity's romance with Luz, appreciating both the happiness it brings their younger sibling and how much it has helped Amity grow as a person.

In the four years since Belos' defeat, Edric and Luz continue to be good friends, with him having been among the many guests celebrating her belated quinceañera as gratitude for all that she had done for the Boiling Isles and its people. Following this, Edric would serve as one of Luz's teachers at the University of Wild Magic after her acceptance into the academy.

Unnamed partner[]

In the episode "Through the Looking Glass Ruins", Edric says that he has a date, however, he does not clarify who they are.
