Homemade Spider Repellent

Spiders.

Ew.

Ew.

Ew.

You feel me, right? I just don’t do them…. No way. No how. Not happening.

If I see one, I run away like the sissy girl that I am and scream for my husband to come kill it.

So, the best thing for me is to prevent them from coming into my house in the first place. And since restraining orders don’t work against those 8 legged freaks – spider repellent is the next best thing.

Today, I’m sharing how to make DIY Natural Spider Repellent 3 different ways.

All of these will repell those icky things… but also not be toxic to your kids or pets – which is definitely a good thing.

How to Make Homemade Spider Repellent

You’ll need a spray bottle for each one of these. Just fill the bottle with one of these natural spider repellents listed below & spray around your doors, windows, & in room corners.

  1. Place 5 cloves of smashed fresh garlic in a spray bottle per 2 cups of water. Let it sit for a few hours before using for best results.
  2. Spiders hate peppermint and citrus! Mix about 10-15drops of peppermint essential oil OR a citrus essential oil (orange essential oil, lemon essential oil, or lime essential oil) to every 2 cups of water. You can also add a few drops of dishwashing soap or Castile soap for a little extra power.
  3. Blend a small handfultomato leaves with 2 cups of water & 1 teaspoon of cornstarch.

With these DIY repellents, the spiders will not be adding your house to their travel bucket list any time soon 😉

  1. Thanks for sharing these 3 recipes! For the last 3 nights, I have been sharing my bedroom with a crafty little spider who slowly descends down from my ceiling fan thing-y, in the dark, but in front of my tv screen which is on. This is how we play…he swings down slowly, & when he is in my site line, I swing my broom handle. We have done this dance now 3 times each night. I don’t want to dance any more! Now, I mix up your brew, you have it in a spray bottle; so, do I seek them out & spritz them, do we spray the outside of the house? Tell me now, or I may be swinging a broom again tonight!

    1. I hope you won’t have to dance again tonight! I’ve this great big fat pitch-black and hairy spider messing with my head. I see him run into my room, but then he just vanishes. So gross.

  2. Will the essential oil trick stain? Looking to rid our boat & Bimini cover of some nasty spiders!

    1. It shouldn’t, but I’d test I small piece of fabric before spraying it to be sure.

  3. Hi Crystal,

I so hope this works, it seams pretty simple. I have a bunch of spiders coming in the house this year. It is even driving my cats crazy. I hate spiders that when I see one, I don’t get any sleep. It takes me like a week to get over seeing the spider and freaking out that it’s in my room or in my bed somewhere. Anyway, my question how often should I spray? Every week, every other day, etc…?

    Reply

    1. I spray 2-3 times a week personally, I don’t like spiders either!

  4. Do I need to mix all three of these solutions together? Or can I just use one recipe to spray spider nests by my front door? Will it work on nests? Please respond.

    Reply

    1. Just pick the recipe you would like to try. They are just different ways to make it!

  5. Hi, Crystal.

I honestly don’t mind spiders in the house – love the jumping ones. If one starts bothering us, I release it outdoors. According to a friend who is a biology professor, spiders gobble up other nasty little things we seriously don’t want in the house. So- we co-exist – except for the poisonous ones like black widows. I flip them into a jar of water and they drown. Easy and no pesticides.

My problems is my porches. I live in Southern Oregon and we have little spiders that make a million sticky little webs all over everything. They can make a porch totally disgusting place in just a few days.

I use peppermint oil spray to keep rodents at bay so your peppermint spray sounds wonderful. Is your spray recipe o.k. to spray all of the porch walls and ceilings or will it hurt the paint? I’ve never used any toxic chemicals on my property – I just want those pesky critters to go live somewhere else so I can enjoy my porches again. It’s been very hot down here – that seems to make things worse.

Thank you for this wonderful site. I’ll be seeing more of you.

  6. I have used this mix using Castile soap. One summer I had spider webs all over ~ big creepy ones. The next year I sprayed your mix and not one spider showed up. Awesome. What is the difference between using the Castile soap and dishwashing soap. Thank you. My one fear in life ~ Spiders!!!

  7. I love these natural spider repellent ideas! I’m always looking for ways to avoid using chemical-based products, and these seem like they would work great. I’ll definitely be trying the essential oil and vinegar spray, and I’ll let you know how it goes!

  8. Just wanted to say you had me cracking up reading what you wrote about spiders. I absolutely HATE spiders and since I alive alone, it’s up to me to do the deadly deed when I see one. I will try one of the recipes around my doors and see if that helps this spring. Thanks!

  9. If using peppermint essential oil & water can a spritz be applied to the skin as well as spraying around the room? Every morning i wake with bites on my arms & legs.
