Discover it Balance Transfer Review
4.2 / 5
The Discover it® Balance Transfer card is a great low interest credit card for people with good credit or better. It offers low introductory APRs on balance transfers and on new purchases, followed by a regular APR. There is a balance transfer fee, but like all other Discover credit cards, Discover it® Balance Transfer has a low annual fee, too.
Unlike most 0% APR credit cards worth getting, the Discover it® Balance Transfer card gives rewards on purchases. Cardholders earn 5% cash back up to a quarterly maximum spent in designated bonus categories that require activation, along with 1% back on all other purchases. Discover also doubles all the rewards new cardmembersearn the first year as an anniversary gift.
Below, you can find the rest of the info you’ll need to decide whether or not to apply for the Discover balance transfer credit card.
Discover it Balance Transfer Review Highlights:
- Good balance-transfer deal. The Discover it Balance Transfer card offers low introductory interest on transfers for months longer thanthe average 0% balance transfer period, which lasts for13 months. After the intro period concludes, any remaining balances are subject to the card's regular APR.
- Balance transfers are not free. The Discover it Balance Transfer card’s main weakness is its balance-transfer fee. That makes it inferior to competing cards with the same fee but longer 0% introductory terms, or slightly shorter 0% terms and no fee. You can use WalletHub’sBalance Transfer Calculatorto compare the costs of each option and find the best balance transfer credit card for your needs.
- Potential for a very high regular rate. The length of the Discover it Balance Transfer credit card’s promotional financing periods is so important because of what follows them: a regular APR rangedepending on your creditworthiness. The low end of that range is aboutthe same as the average APR among credit cards for people with excellent credit, but the high end is above even the average for people with fair credit. So you could get walloped by finance charges if you carry a balance beyond the friendly confines of the card’s 0% intro terms.
- Same rewards as the standard Discover it® Cash Back card. You won’t sacrifice any rewards value relative to the Discover it® Cash Back card by opting for balance-transfer version. They offer the exact same things: 5% cash back in specified bonus categories up to a quarterly maximum (requires activation), plus 1% cash back on everything else and double rewards the first year your account is open. That said, only the bonus-category earning rates are above-average, and the bonus categories rotate quarterly.
- Good credit required. The Discover it Balance Transfer card’s good-credit requirement means it must compete with the market’s top transfer and rewards offers. So you’d be wise tocheck your latest credit score for freeon WalletHub before you apply.

Can I make a Discover card balance transfer to my checking account?

No, you cannot transfer a balance from your Discover credit card to a checking account. When you make a credit card balance transfer, you use a credit card to pay off an existing debt.
However, you can use a cash access check to transfer funds from your Discover credit card into your checking account. You will be able to order Discover card checks once your account has been open for at least 15 days.
Here's how to transfer funds from your Discover credit card to a checking account:
- Order Discover card checks. You can do so either through your online account or by calling(800) 347-2683.
- Deposit the check. After you have received the check, you can fill it in with an amount up to your card's credit limit. You can go to your local bank or sometimes you can deposit the check via the mobile app, depending on the bank.
- Wait for the deposit to process. It can take a few days for the check to be deposited. But sometimes it can take longer.
However, keep in mind that Discover credit card cash access checks are considered cash advances and can be expensive. So it's best to use them just in case of emergency. You should also note that you can only transfer funds to checking accounts from which you've made payments to your Discover credit card bill in the past.

Discover it® Balance Transfer's rewards categories rotate each quarter, require activation and have a quarterly limit. They can include grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, online shopping and more.
For all Discover cards, you can see the cashback calendar on Discover's website. It's also important to note that you needed to activate the category each quarter in order to enjoy the extra cash back and there was a quarterly spend limit for these categories.

You can transfer a balance to your Discover credit card up to your available credit.
Keep in mind that Discover does charge a fee for balance transfers. And any offers of zero percent interest do come with limits, so check the materials that were mailed with your card or call the number on the back of your card for more info.

Decent credit limit but that’s all I can say. They mailed a paper check balance transfer payment weeks ago — YES, in 2023, they sent a physical piece of paper via USPS - and payment is now lost in space. Just floating about in the ether. No one knows where. Meanwhile, my credit score tanked bc I have balances on both accounts AND I’m paying both creditors. Bonus is that by the time they sort things out, I will likely be outside the eligibility period for the 0% BT promotional rate. Which was the whole point of getting this god-forsaken card. Never had this problem before with any of the 4 other BT card companies I’ve used. You’ve been warned!

Horrible…This is a business credit card and it’s reporting to my personal credit and not my business credit. So it is of no benefit to my company which is the reason you get a business card. The rewards have horrible system IF you remember to turn them on every month with their rolling rewards categories. It’s supposed to be designed for newer businesses to help them grow but it winds up being a problem and just another credit card on your personal credit. And no increase requests. Terrible!!! 790 credit score and a 5K credit line…Trash!!!

Discover made a mistake and lost my auto draft information then hit my credit score over 100 points for a missed payment and they would not make it right dropping my years long perfect credit score to a good status instead of excellent. I would have cancelled the card then until they told me my score would be hit again if I cancelled. Their customer service was horrible in my experience.

They make everything so easy and fix mistakes in a timely fashion. It’s the card I use most. I’m in the 800’s in all three bureaus so I’m getting great offers and all credit card companies love it when you don’t hold a balance. Wells Fargo is also a great card I carry. It all stems from what cards you choose and what they are willing to give to get you to apply. I refuse to have any card that has an annual fee.
