Online dating is perhaps synonymous with applications such as Bumble or Tinder, with more than a million active users per month. However, it is pretty surprising that Discord has taken a place among online dating applications with people finding love on the VoIP platform.
The trend began over the past few years during the pandemic. Gamers were using Discord as a platform to hang out with friends digitally as it provides seamless voice chat and a plethora of features encouraging people to find channels based on their interests.
Now, it has evolved into a platform to find the one. There are dedicated servers for meeting new people where users may publish their profiles and build chat rooms to meet new people. Some servers even allow users to "blind match" or fast date.
In fact, there are a few success stories originating from using Discord. For example, 23-year-old Joaquin Enrico Dumayas joined a server to play VALORANT with his group of friends. The channel members were his college classmate, the classmate’s partner, and the partner’s cousin.
“That cousin is my now-girlfriend,” Dumayas said to VICE in the interview.
A similar tale of newfound love can be seen with another VALORANT player who found her partner on Discord.
Julia de los Santos met her partner in a match of VALORANT. The couple felt like they had an unmistakable chemistry despite hailing from different countries. They spent time bonding through movie nights on Discord.
Net Estrada, 27, said that he was never looking for a relationship on Discord, however, it just happened to be that he stumbled upon another person sharing the same interests on the platform.
“Discord gives you a sense of belonging,” said Estrada in the interview. He would spend his time on a call with his newfound partner until late in the evening.
The success stories above are a testament to how flexible Discord is as a platform. While Discord is popularly known and used as a gaming and community platform, it has evolved to the point where communities can be built and relationships can foster simply through a digital gaming platform.
