Introduction

To help someone in need is an important quality every human must have. It is a gesture of kindness and speaks a lot about the person’s personality. Today I am going to talk about a situation when I helped someone.

What the situation was?

Here I am going to talk about a situation when I helped a kid study. She was a class 10th student who was preparing for board examinations but didn’t have enough money to hire a tutor.

Who the person was?

The person I helped was my house helper’s 16-year-old daughter Shivani. Shivani’s mother has been in our house for 20 years. She is a poor woman who works hard to provide for her daughter.

How did you help them.

So o? e day Shivani’s mother came up to me and told me all about her family’s situation. She told me that Shivani is facing difficulties in her studies and this is an important year for her as she will be appearing for her board examinations. She then asked me if I could spare some time for Shivani and help her study. I was more than happy to do so. The next day Shivani came to me with her books. She told me about all the problems she was facing and we chalked out a plan for her. Everyday for 4 months I helped her Study for two hours. She was a brilliant student with a sharp brain and a strong determination to achieve good marks in her board exams. I helped her in every possible way I could.

And explain how you felt after helping him/her.

The feeling of helping someone take a step towards their ambition is one of the best feelings ever. I felt inner satisfaction after helping Shivani. She learnt all the important skills she was facing difficulties with. Every day after coming from her examination she would come to me to discuss her examination. She passed out with flying colours and I was proud of her and myself as well. She came to thank me along with her mother and a box of my favourite sweets. Later her mother told me that Shivani got accepted into one of the prestigious higher secondary school. I was proud of myself for helping a student in need.

Dog: Describe a situation when you helped someone

Introduction

Helping others brings a great deal of satisfaction to people. Inever miss a chance of helping those in need, especially animals. I love helping them in any possible way I can.

Thank you for giving me this cue card topic as I am going to talk about a time when I helped a dog.

What the situation was?

This happened last month when I was sitting on my balcony in the evening sipping coffee. It was a peaceful evening, children were playing in the park in front of my house, women were talking and older people were taking a stroll. I was lost in this peaceful surrounding when I heard a distant yelping but didn’t bother much. After a few minutes, I heard the terrifying cry of a dog and this time I decided not to ignore it. The sound of the dog howling was so terrible, that my heart started racing. I immediately put my coffee mug down and got out of the house running towards the sound of the dog.

Who the person was?

Here the animal in need was our colony’s stray dog. Everyone named him Moti. As I reached I saw Moti was smeared in blood she was crying and licking one of his paws. Moti was a black and white dog with an innocent face but right now half of his body was covered in red. I immediately understood what has happened. He was run over by a vehicle.

How did you help them?

I called my brother who was also sipping coffee with me, to come down immediately with the car keys. I told him what had happened and we had to take Moti to the vet immediately. Without wasting a second my brother rushed to get the car out of the garage and ready to go. I asked him to bring a spare piece of cloth and some water along with him. We washed Moti’s wound, wrapped him with the cloth and drove to the vet. Throughout the drive, Moti was whimpering and shaking. I tried to calm him by sprinkling some water on him. At the vet’s chamber, Moti was laid down on a table with some sedatives induced in his body to lessen the pain. The doctor said he had a torn ligament and a broken jawbone. He will have to undergo a plaster surgery but he will be fine. Along with me, my mother waited there till Moti’s treatment was done.

And explain how you felt after helping him/her

To be honest, helping Moti in a time of distress gave me a feeling of satisfaction and peace. But at the same time, I was furious at whoever ran his vehicle over him. From that day onwards until the next few months, M Oti stayed with me at our house. I took care of him every day. After, helping a being who can’t explain its pain as clearly as us, brought me peace. It also helped me empathize with animals and the pain they can’t express. I am grateful for this experience on my part because after this incident I try to help as many beings as possible.

Blood Donation: Describe a situation when you helped someone

Introduction

Helping others is a quality that is highly appreciated and valued. It has dual benefits as not only does it serve the person in need, but it also makes the helper feel better. Today I will Describe a situation when I helped someone in need.

What the situation was?

Here the situation I am talking about is when I volunteered in a blood donation camp organised by the Rotaract club of my town. They were short of volunteers so they printed an ad in the local newspaper asking for people to volunteer. I was more than happy to oblige as I always wanted to be a part of something that would help a lot of people.

Who the person was?

I volunteered at the blood donation camp by donating my blood and urging more people to do the same. The blood collected from the camp here goes to the blood bank of the government hospital in our town. In other words, I helped at least one person who might need blood in the future.

How did you help them?

I belong to the 1% of donors who have the AB-negative blood group. This blood group is rare and is very difficult to find in times of need. I am a healthy person, so given the opportunity I donated three bags of blood to the blood bank of the government hospital of our town.

And explain how you felt after helping them.

Knowing that I helped people who might be in dire need of blood made me feel better. I was glad to be a part of helping someone. I have vowed to donate blood every year.

Follow-up questions for IELTS cue card topic ‘Describe a situation when you helped someone in need ‘

1. Do you think it’s important to help people?

Yes, certainly it is important to help people. Helping others not only brings a sense of happiness but also helps strengthen relations as a society. We certainly have our share of responsibilities in our families, friends and workplace. But to help someone we don’t know is equally important.

2. Do people hesitate to seek help?

I think yes sometimes people do hesitate in seeking help. Because of the social stigma some might think that seeking help is a sign of being weak or incompetent. Some might also feel that by seeking help, they are burdening others. They see seeking help as a sign of vulnerability and not everyone feels right about being vulnerable. However, I don’t think it should happen. If someone needs help, it is our responsibility as a society to help them. It helps build trust and cooperation thus creating a peaceful environment.

3. Have you ever sought help from others?

Yes, a few years ago I had to get help from one of my friends. I was weak in math and I had to pass my math exam. So I asked her to help me with the subject. He was more than happy to do so. Every day after school, I would go to his house where he would help me with the difficulties I faced in the subject. Later on, I helped him too by teaching him literature as that subject was his weak point.

4. How can our country help visitors?

India is a welcoming country. But due to the language barrier visitors face difficulty. We can help them by providing language assistance. Another way to help foreigners is by providing them information about the streets and destination as they mostly rely on maps and end up lost on the streets. In a few cases nowadays I have also seen foreigners being harassed by local people. We must try to educate these people as their behavior directly reflects our nation.

5. How can we encourage children to help others?

We can encourage children to help others by setting a good example for them. Elders of the house should always help each other. They can include their child by making small charitable donations or even by feeding a stray dog. The motive is to inculcate a sense of helping someone, always.
