Retardation is defined as the rate of decrease of velocity with time.suppose if a car is slowing down,its velocity is decreasing,so its acceleration is negetive.But retardation is positive.Retardation is negetive of acceleration.For example,a car moving on straight road ,at some instant the velocity of car is 12 m/s.Aftet 2 seconds the velocity is 6m/s.The acceleration is (6-12)÷2= (-3) m/s^2. Its retardation is -(-3)=3.
