Abstract
‘Cryptography in everyday life’ contains a range of situations where the use of cryptography facilitates the provision of a secure service: cash withdrawal from an ATM, Pay TV, email and file storage using Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) freeware, secure web browsing, and use of a GSM mobile phone. PGP and its cryptographic processes are described in more detail. It uses both symmetric and asymmetric cryptography and a two-level key hierarchy in which symmetric session keys are used to protect data, and asymmetric keys are used for both signature and the protection of the symmetric session keys.
