How do I cover my cruise?
Covering your cruise is simple: take out a Travel Insurance policy and tell us where you’re going on a cruise.
Most cruise operators ask that you have a good level of cover in place before you board and might ask you for proof of cruise holiday insurance. So, it’s important you check you’ve bought a policy with the right limits to suit your trip.
When you buy a Comprehensive or Signature Travel Insurance policy, you can also add optional Cruise Plus Cover. This gives you extra protection from things like missed port departures, itinerary changes and cabin confinement.
What is Cruise Plus Cover?
Cruise Plus Cover covers you against things that only happen at sea. It’s important to take out cruise travel insurance when you book your trip, as a standard policy might not cover you for everything you need.
Add Cruise Plus Cover to your Comprehensive or Signature annual or single-trip travel insurance policy to get cover for:
✔ Missed port departures
✔ Itinerary changes
✔ Cabin confinement
✔ Unused excursions
✔ Cruise interruption
Some cruise operators, such as , ask you to take out a policy with at least £2m of medical and repatriation cover. Our cover gives you up to unlimited emergency medical and repatriation expenses, so that’s another box ticked.

People also asked
Can I get cruise travel insurance if I have medical conditions?
You can get cover for most pre-existing medical conditions on your cruise cover, as we believe that something you live with day to day shouldn’t affect your ability to travel.
Will I be covered if I have a medical emergency on my cruise?
As long as you’ve declared and covered all your pre-existing conditions on your travel insurance policy, you’ll be covered for medical emergencies — even if they’re related to your conditions.
Am I covered for health outbreaks while on a cruise?
In certain situations, you can be covered for health outbreaks on cruises if you have optional Cruise Plus Cover.
For example, if your cruise itinerary changes because of a health outbreak, meaning you can’t port in a certain place, you’ll be able to claim for up to £75 for each missed port. Cruise Plus Cover can also cover you if a medical professional confines you to your cabin because you’re unwell.
It’s important to understand how viruses, food poisoning and other health outbreaks could affect your cruise. Check your policy documents for more information and take a look at our COVID Travel Insurance to learn more.
Can I get annual travel insurance including cruise cover?
You can get annual travel insurance with cruise cover. Simply tell us you’re going on a cruise and check cruise cover is included on your policy documents.
This will cover you for up to 183 days of cruise and non-cruise holidays in 12 months. Just make sure each trip you’re going on is no more than 50 days long if you’re aged 70 and below, and no more than 35 days long if you’re aged 71 and above.
You’ll need to declare and cover any pre-existing conditions when you take out your policy. We’ll ask you about symptoms, appointments and investigations within the last two years. We’ll also need to know if you’ve had any of the following:
- Cardiovascular or circulatory condition, e.g. heart condition
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Blood clots
- Raised cholesterol
- Stroke
- Aneurysm
How do I get the additional cruise cover?
To add Cruise Plus Cover to your policy, choose a Comprehensive Single Trip or Annual Multi-Trip policy and choose Cruise Plus Cover as an optional extra when prompted.
You can also do it over the phone. Simply tell us you’d like to cover a cruise, and we’ll help tailor your policy to suit you.
Can I get travel insurance for a river cruise?
Of course you can cover a river cruise. You’ll need to let us know that you’re going on a cruise when getting your quote to make sure it’s part of your policy.
Which destinations can I get cover for?
You should be covered in most destinations if the country you’re going to is safe to visit.
To check your destination is safe to visit, take a look at the FCDO’s travel advice. The FCDO’s advice can change at any time, so make sure you check it’s safe to travel before you set off.
If the FCDO, World Health Organisation or local authorities have advised against ‘all’ or ‘all but essential’ travel to your destination, then it won’t be safe for you to travel there.
If you travel against FCDO advice, your policy will become invalid and won’t cover you if you need to claim. Even if advice changes while you’re on holiday, you won’t be covered if your destination was listed as unsafe when you travelled.
Do I need to list all of the countries I’m visiting on my cruise for cruise travel insurance?
Yes, you'll need to tell us about every country you'll be porting at during your cruise holiday.
Important: If your cruise takes you through the Suez Canal, you will also need to add ‘Egypt’ to the list of countries, even if the ship does not plan to port there.
Even if you're not planning on getting off the ship, you'll still need to tell us all of the countries that you'll be porting at.
Do I need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to be covered?
To be covered for COVID on our policies, you need to have had all doses of the COVID vaccine you’ve been offered, including any booster jabs.
You can also be covered if you can’t have the vaccine due to a medical exemption.
If you’ve refused any doses of the COVID vaccine then you won’t be covered for COVID related claims.
