Car insurance costs can be pricey and aggravating for many drivers, but unfortunately a specific requirement in most countries around the world. With some countries requiring car insurance for all drivers whilst others making it more of an optional affair, prices around the world will undoubtedly vary. In this post, we’ll look at the countries with the highest car insurance costs.
1. United States of America
In the United States, on average people pay around $1,706.86 (USD) per year to insure their car – a figure that is significantly high for a total average figure. Although car insurance costs differentiate state by state, with some being grossly overpriced in comparison to its nearest neighbour (average of $2699 in Louisiana, for example!, car owners in New Hampshire and Virginia do not have to pay anything.

2.Austria
In Austria, many drivers see car insurance as uncompetitive and expensive, opting only for third-party insurance (of which all drivers must have at least third-party insurance in law) in a hope to decrease the price to be paid. An Austrian citizen is likely to pay anything from 60 euros a month to 150 euros, which would come to around 720-1800 euros a year! Due to the shockingly high prices, many Austrians opt for utilising public transport and renting smart cars to travel around in places such as Vienna.
3.Germany
With Germany, all drivers before registering a car must have third party liability coverage to protect others against any damage that could be inflicted on them. For a comprehensive policy, the price of insurance increases considerably and, as with many countries, the different factors (age, experience, location) can affect the price you pay. On average, you are likely to spend around 1400 euros on a yearly basis. Germany is also in another driving world of its own, as its traffic laws allow faster speeds on its roads and its expensive cars are freer to have fun.
4.United Kingdom
The United Kingdom – a country we might just know so very well. The home country of Ashburnham, we know how expensive car insurance can be for some. In the UK, such insurance prices can be around £1000 a year, but the official average looks to be around £439 to a figure under £500. Young people, those who live in big metropolitan cities and the less experienced, however, have to bear the burden of paying out more extortionate fees. Premiums for young drivers can reach anywhere over £2,500 and those living in the city can see an average cost of £1,500 a year, rather than the £439 average nationwide.
5.Australia
The national average cost of car insurance in Australia totals to around $735.60 (AUD), with Australia’s biggest city, Sydney, costing its consumer around $1175 per year for auto insurance. It’s expected that Australian citizens will spend 1.5% of their annual income on auto insurance. By law, every Australian must have compulsory third party (CTP) insurance but comprehensive is optional and will look to ensure full protection of vehicle and driver.
