What are countermeasures on a lie detector test? ›

Countermeasures are anything that a subject does in a deliberate effort to defeat, distort or alter a polygraph test.

A countermeasure is a suggested or proposed solution. We don't call them solutions because they're ideas about what might address the problem—you can call it a solution once you know it works.

Common examples of countermeasures include security controls, policies, procedures, or technology created to prevent or lessen the effects of security incidents.

Medications that affect heart rate and blood pressure can affect polygraph results. These include antihypertensives and anti-anxiety medications and also a host of illegal drugs, including heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine.

Can lie detectors be cheated? It is possible to beat the polygraph, says Newcastle University Emeritus Professor Don Grubin, but it takes a lot of practice with the equipment and examiners are trained to spot the signs of anyone trying to trick the test.

A countermeasure is an action that you take in order to weaken the effect of another action or a situation, or to make it harmless.

Advanced countermeasures range from physical chaff, flare, and decoy expendables to acoustic, infrared, and laser countermeasures. Electronic countermeasures (ECM) can also jam, modify, and/or deceive opponents' attacks using RF communications, and radar countermeasures systems.

Countermeasures "must not involve any departure from certain basic obligations (art. 50, para. 1)," in particular obligations concerning threat of force, protection of fundamental human rights, and "peremptory norms of international law".

Why use countermeasures? ›

Countermeasures that reduce the potential of a conflict and those that reduce the severity of a conflict can be deployed simultaneously to enhance safety.

OPSEC countermeasures may include, but are not limited to: modification of operational and administrative routines; the use of cover, concealment, deception; and other measures that degrade the adversary's ability to exploit indicators of critical information.

The mental and physical countermeasures were equally effective: Each enabled approximately 50% of the Ss to defeat the polygraph test. The strongest countermeasure effects were observed in the cardiovascular measures. Moreover, the countermeasures were difficult to detect either instrumentally or through observation.
