What are the OSHA requirements for flammable liquid storage? ›

1. Not more than 25 gallons of flammable or combustible liquids may be stored in a room outside of an approved storage cabinet. 2. Not more than 60 gallons of flammable (flashpoint below 140 degrees F) or 120 gallons of combustible (flashpoint at or above 140 degrees F) may be stored in any one storage cabinet.

Flammable materials such as wd40, aerosols, and many cleaners may be used as needed but must be returned to flammable cabinets after their use is complete. Some flammables are on 5s boards and push carts.

Flammable liquid storage cabinets are not intended for storage of non-flammable chemicals, including oxidizers, highly toxic materials, acids, bases, or compressed gases. Some of these chemicals may dangerously interact with flammable liquids or damage the integrity of a flammable cabinet.

Can Cardboard Boxes be stored in Flammable Cabinets? The short answer is no. Under no circ*mstances should you store flammable materials such as paper or cardboard alongside flammable and hazardous materials.

NFPA 30 18.5. 4.1 stipulates the maximum quantity of flammable liquids in a single fire area should not exceed 25 gallons of Class IA liquids in approved containers. Additionally, NFPA 30 warns against storing more 120 gallons of Class IB, Class IC, Class II, or Class III liquids in containers.

Because most flammable liquids storage cabinets also have lockable doors, some WHS staff think that it's a regulatory requirement to keep flammable cabinets locked. However, this common practice of locking flammable cabinet doors is not actually a legal requirement.

What are the OSHA requirements for fuel storage? ›

Stored fuel containers shall be located to minimize exposure to excessive temperatures and physical damage. Containers shall not be stored near exits, stairways or areas normally used or intended for egress. Outlet valves of containers in storage or transport shall be closed.

Safe storage of highly flammable liquids

When not in use, containers of flammable liquids will be kept closed and stored in suitable cabinets or bins of fire-resisting construction that are designed to retain spills (110% volume of the largest vessel normally stored in it).
