Achieving Connectivity with LSV/2
What is the LSV/2 Protocol Used For?
The LSV-2 protocol allows computers and machines to process and interpret 16-bit code for Advanced Technology (AT) computers. This standard was popular in the 1980s and was used for second-generation PCs with a 286 CPU and 16-bit bus.
This capability is crucial for automating equipment with older electronics. Advanced platforms like MachineMetrics allow manufacturers to connect new digital and legacy analog equipment to the machine data platform. LSV-2 is used in equipment that still utilizes the 16-bit bus and eliminates the need to purchase new equipment.
The LSV/2 enables the collection of data from Heidenhain TNC controls to support DNC and machine monitoring.
Key Features of LSV-2
Key features include:
- Data Transfer: LSV-2 breaks data into blocks called telegrams. The data is then separated and available for transmission. Data transfer is two-way.
- File Management: Users can access a PC to delete or copy files. They can also rename files if needed.
- Write Screen: Users can do a screen dump of data and write a screen directly to a file.
- Remote Controls: Users can execute all TNC machine control functions remotely.
- DNC Operations: All DNC operations can be remotely accessed via an external computer.
- Error Messages: The software allows for the diagnosis of TNC errors for the last 100 events.
Is LSV/2 Free?
LSV-2 is a paid software and must be purchased via a license. Developers cannot share the software across multiple users or systems.
There are two LSV-2 software packages available from Heidenhain. The first is TNC REMOTE, explicitly used for AT-enabled PCs, and the second is LSV/2 TOOLBOX, used for those developing applications in the C programming language.
How Do I Connect to LSV-2?
The age of your equipment will determine the way you connect to LSV-2. It was developed for second-generation computers and will be found on many CNC machines with these systems onboard. Connection is made via a 16-bit serial Bus.
How Do I Connect My LSV-2 Enabled Machines to a Platform?
MachineMetrics is a machine data platform that connects legacy and new machine assets. It lets you collect, monitor, analyze, and drive action with manufacturing equipment data.
The platform easily captures real-time data generated by your machines across both legacy and modern assets.
Frontline workers and other factory floor systems have access to a complete toolkit to drive actionable insights that improve the efficiency and quality of production.
With the MachineMetrics Machine Data Platform, your legacy LSV-2 equipment can be easily connected, and its data can be added to that of other assets for complete operational visibility.
