Is paying for Colab worth it? ›

Please save your work. Yes! Subscribing to Colab Pro or Pro+ gives you access to higher RAM runtimes, and in the case of Pro+, access to background execution. Colab Pro and Pro+ subscriptions will grant you additional compute units every month.

First off, you pay for GPU time using the “compute units” in your account. The only way to get units is to pay $10 for 100 of them–pretty simple.

Colab Pro offers 100 compute units with access to more powerful GPUs, memory, features, access to terminal, and productivity enhancements powered by AI assistance. Colab Pro+ includes all the benefits of Colab Pro, such as AI-assisted productivity enhancements, plus an extra 400 compute units, totaling 500 per month.

In the version of Colab that is free of charge you are able to access VMs with a standard system memory profile.
