Clubbing Culture In Korea (For Foreigners) | Gallery posted by jeannette | Lemon8 (2024)

Before hitting the clubs in Korea, I think it’s pretty important to know a few things because clubbing in a foreign land without knowing the culture can be quite dangerous!

Q1. Where To Go?

for clubbing, we usually frequent hongdae and itaewon, but hongdae’s the hotspot now ever since the Halloween incident happen! haven’t tried gangnam but I heard it’s hard to get inside unless you have connections - but if you’re a lady and dressed well, they’d likely let you in! chances are significantly lower if you’re a male foreigner (sorry)

one of my favourite clubs to go to is still doze (hongdae) but you can check out hongdae ff (@hongdaeff on IG) because they always have themes like indie, retro nights which are more catered towards foreigners~ cakepop (itaewon) is also quite famous and they usually have gigs there done by famous rappers/djs

Q2. Are There Any Dress Codes?

Most clubs don’t require any strict dressing, so just wear your usual clubbing clothing (but obviously with no slippers/slides). For gangnam I know they’re extremely strict and I heard they even require men to dress in suits in order to enter…

Q3. How Much To Pay?

In hongdae, most clubs are free to enter and if you go early (before ~11pm), the club promoters will even entice you (only for ladies) to come in for a free drink! Some of the more popular hip hop clubs like Doze require a $10 entry fee but I had free flow vodka shots till 5am after paying so it’s 100% worth (not sure if it’s a one-time event)!

Q4. What To Bring?

Your IC/Passport/ARC! They need a physical identification most of the time so just bring it in case!

Q5. What To Wear In Winter?

Honestly don’t be shy and just wear your puffer jackets. I know most clubs have jacket hanging services for a small fee but we never bothered with those. We just wear our coats in! But many locals wore only their autumn coat (even in negative degrees) and mini skirts which is INSANE…. And I know gangnam cares a lot about appearance so I think you can increase your chance without a puffer since I’ve not seen a single lady wore a puffer jacket to gangnam clubs 🫠

Q5. Celebrities Spotting?

Only near the gangnam areas like sinsa-dong! my friend spotted gdragon, btob, txt, and many other famous rappers!! will also be good to do some research on any upcoming dj sets by giving the club igs a follow!

Q6. Pre-drink?

We usually pre-drink soju (which cost like $2) so it’s super cheap! Most clubs have convenience stores nearby so it’s pretty easy to settle that before heading in to the clubs. And we often get like a second round in the midst to keep the high on HAHAHA

Q7. How Safe Is It?

honestly…. I’ve heard and seen korean men being pushy/aggressive… and I literally have to grab my friend to save her from the guy 🫠 I think most of the time this can be solved if you just tell the guys to nicely back off or go in between them but my friends had super bad experiences at itaewon clubs because of how pushy the men are!!! heard of horror stories of how some guys tried to follow the girls back home so make sure you go in bigger groups especially for your first time and don’t get too drunk 🥹

Q8. More About The People

I think korean girls are extremely friendly and they’d usually strike up conversations with you when you make eye contact ☺️ like complimenting your outfit/appearance!!! super sweet people and some will even dance with you or invite you to their table to drink! Id say clubs are a fair mix of locals and foreigners (depending on where you go, in the past itaewon had more foreigners. hongdae is more 50-50 for the ratio while Gangnam definitely has more locals) I also heard that people in Gangnam clubs don’t really dance and the crowd is like way older, but you get pretty cool experiences like how my friend met this guy who drove them from places to places to club-hop!! 😆

Q9. Going Back

Clubs are opened till 5am mostly and that’s when the subway starts working (how good right) so we usually just take the train back since cab fees can be REALLY expensive… if not I’d strongly recommend you to download this app called Kakao Taxi if you ever need to book a cab back! (Works like grab and you can pay in cash)!

in general just be safe and make sure you share your location with your friends before going in (just so that at least they know where to send you to). also bring tissue along because the toilet paper runs out easily so good to have some with you when you pee!!
