Thinking about joining CIA? You are making an important decision. Because of our critical mission, we require several important items from all candidates. Review the following requirements that you must meet to qualify for employment at CIA.

You Must Submit Online via MyLINK, While in the United States

You must be physically within the United States or one of its territories when you submit your resume via MyLINK. This is for your safety and security.

While you may travel abroad for a short duration during the hiring process, do not contact us while you are physically outside of the United States or its territories. This includes by hard copy mail, telephone, email, or internet.

You Must Be a U.S. Citizen and at Least 18 Years of Age

You must be a U.S. citizen or a dual-national U.S. citizen to work at CIA. If you are in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen, you can submit your resume as soon as you are awarded citizenship, but not before. We do not help individuals apply for U.S. citizenship.

Also, you must be at least 18 years of age to qualify for a job at CIA.

You Must Be Willing to Move to the Washington, DC Area

Our officers are from all over the country and around the world. But keep in mind that all positions are in the Washington, DC area and some require overseas travel. You must be willing to move if you don’t already live in the Washington metropolitan area. For questions about relocation, please speak to your recruiter.

You Must Complete Security and Medical Evaluations

Because of the classified nature of our work, all CIA applicants must go through a comprehensive security clearance process.

You Must Be Registered for the Selective Service

If you are required to register for the Selective Service, you must do so before we consider you for employment.

It can be difficult, but not impossible. If you asked me how difficult it is on a scale of 1–10, I would say a solid 7.5 to an 8. If you applied and have something that the CIA wants, it will probably not be as difficult for you compared to someone who applied and does not have a critical skill that they need.

What are the requirements to take the CIA exam? ›

Before you can sit for the CIA exam, you must make sure you have the proper education. CIA candidates are required to have a 4-year post-secondary degree (or higher). This degree must come from an accredited university that is recognized by the IIA.

What age is too late to join CIA? ›

There's no maximum age limit for any role at the CIA with the exception of operations officers, which for them is 35. However, even for operations officers, its a case by case basis, and they may take you in the clandestine service beyond that age if you have in demand skill sets.

Can a CIA agent have tattoo? ›

Tattoos or brands that are indecent or violate the Agency's harassment policy must be covered at all times while at work, including while in locker rooms. The Agency does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, parental status, sexual orientation or gender identity.

All Executive Protective Agents must successfully complete a physical fitness test for selection and on an annual basis thereafter, to include meeting the following minimum requirements: Push-ups: minimum of 18 in one minute. Sit-ups: minimum of 27 in one minute. 1.5 mile run: 15 min 20 sec or less.

The CIA requires applicants to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. A degree in law enforcement, criminal justice or a related field serves as good preparation for a career as a CIA agent.
