That spare change you’ve been holding onto may be worth more than its face value.
While coin collecting may seem like a trivial hobby, the reality is that there are some coins out there that are worth so much that they can fetch thousands, or in some cases, millions of dollars.
Here are the five most valuable coins that are still in circulation, according to GoBankingRates:
1. 1913 Liberty Head Nickel
One of these coins, of which there are only five in existence, went up for sale in 2022 at an auction for $4.2 million.
This coin is also called the Walton Nickel, and experts say that we may not see one of these coins turn up for decades.
The U.S. Mint swapped the Liberty Head nickel for the Indian Head nickel in 1912, but five Liberty nickels were made anyway without government approval. People didn’t even know these five coins existed until 1919.
2. The 1787 Fugio Cent
Also known as “The Franklin cent,” it was the first coin to be circulated in the U.S. It was minted in 1787 and only 398,577 were made.
This coin may not be a record-setter at auction houses, but its history could fetch you hundreds if not thousands of dollars for this type of coin.
3. 1969-S Lincoln Cent With a Doubled Die Obverse
This penny is worth anywhere between a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. A mother in Texas found one of these coins in May 2014, and it was valued at $24,000 at the time.
The Secret Service used to confiscate these coins thinking they were fake until the U.S. Mint confirmed they were real.
4. 1955 Double Die Lincoln Penny
According to The Spruce, this is one of the most popular error coins the U.S. Mint has ever produced. One of these coins recently fetched $2,000 on eBay at auction.
A manufacturing issue led to the design on the die being doubled. By the time mint employees noticed, thousands of coins had already been produced and were mixed in with other coins, so it wasn’t worth disrupting the process.
5. 1983 Penny With No Mint Mark
According to CoinHub, this penny can fetch up to $7,000. The reason why it’s so valuable is because it’s missing a mint mark, which is a letter engraved on the face side that indicates where every coin is made.
