A challan is a document issued in a vehicle driver's name if he or she is discovered infringing traffic rules and regulations. If a traffic challan is issued, the person is required to pay a fine. According to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, the penalty varies depending on the type of infringement. A person who does not respect the traffic laws can be issued a challan by the traffic police. With the rising frequency of traffic accidents, challans actually assist traffic cops in ensuring greater enforcement of traffic laws. E-challan refers to a document that is generated electronically through the Electronic Challan System.
