This side quest is a branch of the quest Novice of Mystery in the Order of Mystery quest-line. To complete this quest you must seek out the components to create the Phantom Device, a legendary stealth boy used by the Order of Mysteries to complete their silent Assassinations.

- Phantom Device: A modified Stealth Boy that frenzies enemies around you for 30 seconds.

To create the Phantom Device you will need 2 pieces:
- Stealth Boy
- HalluciGen Gas Canister from the Garrahan Mining HQ.
If you already have a stealth boy in your inventory then you only need to worry about grabbing the canister, otherwise researching the Phantom Device component section in CRYPTOS' database will provide you not only the location of the canister at the Garrahan Mining HQ but also the location of a stealth boy.
Locating the HalluciGen Gas
The Hallucigen Gas Canister is located at the Garrahan Mining Headquarters in the bottom left hand region of Appalachia, known as the Ash Heap.
Follow the marker inside the Headquarters to the CEO's office. you will notice a safe with a high skill lock-pick barrier (Skill:3). Don't worry if you lack the skill required to open the safe, if you look at the desk with the CEO's terminal on it, you will notice the Terminal requires no skill to hack.
Hacking the terminal will reveal the option to unlock the safe to your left, as well as some diary entries to provide more context to this company which may relate to other missions in the wasteland.
Inside the Safe is where you should find the canister! You now have one of two parts necessary for the Phantom Device.
Finding a Stealth Boy
You may have a stealth boy already in your inventory, if so you may skip to the final step of this mission!

However if you have not come across a stealth boy yet fear not, CRYPTOS has marked one on the map for you. While it is unknown if CRYPTOS marks the same location every time, one location you can find a stealth boy is at the North Cutthroat Camp in the Savage Divide region of Appalachia.
There will be a number of Schorched there, but once you take them out feel free to loot the entire area. There is an ammo box near the front entrance and an explosives crate in the area as well.
Head South through the camp until you come across a raider corpse on the couch on your right side. In this living area, along with a Tinker's Workbench will be a footlocker that requires Skill: 0 to lockpick. Along with the chance for some armor or ammo you will find a stealth boy for your Phantom Device.
Crafting the Phantom Device
Once you have both the essential components return to Riverside Manor and the secret headquarters hidden below. Activate the fabrication machine with the two items in your inventory and it will create the Phantom Device, A modified stealth boy the frenzies enemies around you for 30 Seconds.
With the Phantom Device in your inventory, you have completed Chasing Shadows and one third of Novice of Mystery quest.
