Thank you for your interest in joining the Letters to Strangers Team! We always believe that the best way to get involved with us is by starting or joining a Chapter near you, and joining our network in that way may result in you receiving extra consideration in the core team's hiring process. But of course, the HeadQuarters [HQ] Team is constantly on the lookout for incredible people to join our core team from within and outside of our network. If you want a position with HQ, read on! NOTE: As a youth-for-youth organization, we prioritize individuals more likely to understand the needs of the demographic we serve. However, all individuals are welcome to apply!

PAID POSITIONS

Paid positions at Letters to Strangers, Inc. are independent contractor positions compensated with either a monthly stipend or hour-based wage, with details to be finalized upon hire.All paid positions are available for individuals 16 or older only. If you are under 18 years old, parent/legal guardian permission is required. Because this is a paid position, no volunteer hours can be earned through this.

WE EXPECT ALL WHO APPLY TO A PAID POSITION TO BE ABLE TO COMMIT TO THE ROLE FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR, OUTSIDE OF UNCONTROLLABLE OR EMERGENCY CIRc*msTANCES.

Legal Counsel

  • Particularly looking for lawyers, jurists, law clerks, and other legal professionals with knowledge in the fields of healthcare, professional liability, international law, and/or disability.Knowledge in the copyright/trademark realms are a plus.

  • This role serves more as an occasional consultant of existing or new programs rather than as a heavily-involved partner in designing something in full from scratch. As we are a small nonprofit, the rate would be less than that of typical full legal consultancy fees but there is tremendous flexibility in recognition of that.

  • Must have at least some law school and/or court/case/field experience

  • Those based in or with knowledge of legal systems outside of the U.S. are especially encouraged to apply, though we would like to meet U.S.-based folks too!

Medical Counsel

  • Particularly looking for doctors, therapists, psychiatrists, emergency personnel, and other medical professionals with knowledge of mental health

  • This is different from our health worker volunteers, who work more with Chapters rather than HQ.

  • This role serves more as a reviewer of existing content rather than as a creator of new material. As we are a small nonprofit, the rate would be less than that of typical full medical consultancy fees but there is tremendous flexibility in recognition of that.

  • Must have at least medical school and/or clinical/field experience

Hours:Flexible/Project-based

Media Team (Designer)

  • Communicates with content writers/creators in the Letters to Strangers network about their schedules, projects, and proposals and come up with ideas for necessary designs

  • Helps edit and publish content created by members of the Letters to Strangers network, particularly through the Lessons from Strangers magazine

  • Generates design ideas for new strategies about mental health education and other work done by Letters to Strangers for implementation across social media, websites, and print mediums

  • Must be fluent in English

  • Must have experience in magazine/print/graphic design, copywriting, and editing

Location:Remote/Anywhere

Hours: ~5 hours/week

Digital Presence/Ads Manager

  • Create, manage, and maintain our presence on ad spaces (Google AdSense, various social media platforms, etc.) to increase our reach and brand awareness

  • Optimize other aspects of our online presence, such as SEO

  • Analyze data on various ad campaigns to measure outcomes and improve campaign implementation

  • While you could work with other designers on our team to make creatives for campaigns,we prefer candidates who have graphic design skills

  • Must have strong English writing skills

  • Must have a working knowledge of platforms like AdSense or similar platforms

Volunteers

Volunteer Internships

Volunteer internships at Letters to Strangers, Inc. are unpaid but designed to maximize your personal development and impact, from giving you large amounts of autonomy to granting you the chance for your ideas to be internationally implemented. We accept interns and volunteers year-round unless otherwise stated for a specific position.These internships can go toward volunteer hours.

WE EXPECT ALL WHO APPLY TO A VOLUNTEER POSITION TO BE ABLE TO COMMIT TO AT LEAST SIX MONTHS OF THE ROLE, OUTSIDE OF UNCONTROLLABLE/EMERGENCY CIRc*msTANCES.

Researcher/Content Writer

  • Flexibility to work on different topics, from policy to identity to educational content on mental health

  • Gather current mental health-related laws, cases, scientific papers, and policy proposals

  • Though we may accept content in non-English languages, westrongly prefer candidates with strong English writing and research skills.

Research Assistant

  • Work with our research team to carry out activities related to our clinical study, including but not limited to researching potential institutional partners, filing necessary documentation, communicating with funders and other researchers involved, etc.

  • We strongly prefer candidates with strong English writing and research skills.

  • Previous experience in clinical study settings is a plus.

Grant Writer Assistant

  • Assist our grant-writing team in researching and applying for grants

  • Help write grant applications and cultivate relationships with grant organizations/foundations

  • Must have strong English writing skills

Location:Remote/Anywhere

Hours:Flexible/Project-based

Development Intern

  • Assist our outreach and development team with designing, implementing, tracking, evaluating, and improving upon existing and new outreach and fundraising programs

  • Familiarize self with Chapters and broader Letters to Strangers network and innovate ideas for improving our global brand awareness and development goals

  • Partake in large-scale global partnerships with some of the world's largest companies and organizations to expand our shared mission of fighting for youth mental health

  • Must have strong English communication skills

  • Variety in skillset preferred (multilingual, computer programming, art, marketing, etc.)

Hours:10 hours/week

Advocacy Lead

  • Work with our community-based allies to propose policy changes in city councils and legislatures for better mental healthcare access

  • Support Chapters' advocacy efforts on school campuses

  • Must have strong English writing skills

  • Understanding of local laws or political systems a strongly recommended plus

Location:Remote/Anywhere

Hours:Flexible/Project-based

Regional Ambassador

  • Help coordinate, implement, and evaluate our programming in locations around the world

  • Serve as L2S spokesperson in partnership or media outreach for programming in represented region

  • Help expand L2S network and programming in represented region

  • Become a key recognizable figure in L2S work across regions but especially in represented region

  • Must be based in one of the following regions: Middle East, North Africa, East Africa, Southern Africa, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Central Asia, East Europe, West Europe, Pacific (Australia/New Zealand/Pacific Islands), South America, Central America, or Canada.

  • Must have strong communication skills in at least one language spoken dominantly in represented region

  • Ability to communicate in English is important but complete fluency is not required

  • Background in organization administration, project management, media outreach, recruitment, and/or program development a strong plus

*This position can come with personal brand-building through esteemed media and corporate partnerships and other forms of project-based compensation.

Translator

  • Translate existing Letters to Strangers resources into a language other than English

  • Must have written (semiformal) fluency in a language other than English("semiformal" refers to the level of formality associated with a school assignment, but not as formal as addressing a government leader or on a news broadcast. This specification may not apply to you if your language does not differentiate verbiage/grammar based on formality.)

  • Must be fluent in English reading and writing

  • Previous positions in translation work and/or tests/references to prove fluency are preferred.

*This position may be converted to a paid position if enough demand for its services is shown.
