Caitlin Clark stats: Iowa star breaks women's D1 single-season scoring record in close win over WVU | Sporting News (2024)

Iowa lives to see another game.

The top-seeded Hawkeyes advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 64-54 victory over WVU, but it didn't come easy.

From the moment the game tipped off, it was chippy and physical. Iowa held a two-point lead at the half, as neither team scored in double-digits in the second quarter. It was the Hawkeyes’ lowest-scoring half this season.

After Iowa mostly dominated the third quarter, West Virginia recovered to make it a back-and-forth affair in the fourth. The Mountaineers even tied it with two minutes to go, but fouls plagued the 8-seed. The Mountaineers had 27 called on them compared to 11 for Iowa. By the time the final buzzer rang, JJ Quinerly and Jordan Harrison had fouled out.

Still, it was hard to stop Caitlin Clark. The senior had another historic night, setting the Division I women's single-season scoring record with 1,113 points. Of her 32 points against WVU, 15 were from beyond the arc.

It was a great fight from West Virginia, but the Mountaineers couldn't stop a storybook ending to Clark’s career at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Now, the Hawkeyes head to Albany, New York, to face fifth-seeded Colorado in the Sweet 16.
