Most people choose to visit Stockholm in June, July and August when the weather is at its best. The summer may be short, but the days are long and the city has a celebratory air, particularly after Midsummer, with verdant parks, urban beaches and island excursions to enjoy.

Between late May and mid-July, the northerly reaches above the Arctic Circle experience the midnight sun, while more southerly cities enjoy long twilights. The weather is warm, around 21°C, and the ample sun attracts visitors through until the end of August.

Stockholm is a very walkable city which is one of the reasons why we loved it so much. We were able to walk to almost all of the tourist attractions and areas of the city that we wanted to visit.

We love both city's equally. But depending on what you are looking for we can recommend one city over another. For history buffs and nature lovers, we would choose Stockholm over Copenhagen.

In terms of costs, Stockholm is slightly more expensive than the UK for some things but lots of things in Stockholm are free! These include entry to the Swedish Parliament, Art on the Underground and some, but not all, of the Museums.

What is the rainy season in Sweden? ›

Sweden receives relatively little rainfall. There is no single rainy season as precipitation is spread fairly evenly over the year. August and September are two of the warmer months, but they're also the wettest, with Stockholm seeing 2.6 inches (65mm) of rain in each, and rain likely on nine days.

If want to visit Sweden as a tourist for longer than 90 days you can be granted a residence permit for visits so that your total stay amounts to a maximum of six months. The duration of the permit will be based on the circ*mstances of each individual case.

Due to this, summer is the most popular time to visit Sweden but it is also one of the wettest times of the year. The spring and autumn seasons are perfect for travel thanks to the mild climate and comparatively long hours of sunshine, but you won't see the Northern lights or the sun at midnight.

1. No cash needed: The official currency of Sweden is SEK (There's no need to exchange a lot of currency – Stockholm is in large parts a cash-free city. Although you'll find ATMs (recognized by teal/blue-green-colored signs reading "Bankomat"), many restaurants, shops, and hotels don't accept bills or coins.

A public toilet would be 5-10 sek. Coffe differs a lot but in the city it is between 25-35 sek. You can use credit cards for coffee as well.

The best time to visit Stockholm is in the summer – albeit the city's priciest season – because the temperatures are warmest and daylight lasts the longest. Average summertime highs range between 68 and 71 degrees Fahrenheit, with the hottest weather occurring in mid-July.

But depending on what you are looking for we can recommend one city over another. For history buffs and nature lovers, we would choose Stockholm over Copenhagen. But for design enthusiasts, foodies, beer lovers and nightlife partiers, we recommend Copenhagen over Stockholm.

Visiting Stockholm doesn't need to bust your budget. Sure, it's expensive, but there are many ways to save money here. While it's never going to be dirt cheap, it can still be affordable if you plan ahead and embrace the tips above. Don't let money keep you away from this underrated and oft-skipped destination.

Summer in Sweden

July is the warmest month, with temperatures in both Stockholm and Gothenburg averaging around 64°F (18°C). Notably, May through June and the month of September, are almost prettier than the Swedish summers.

If you want to see the city in sunny conditions but avoid the summer crowds, the weather in Stockholm in April could be ideal. During the day, high temperatures will reach 9°C, with a light breeze from the Baltic Sea to the east. It'll drop to lows of about 1°C at night.
