How To Choose the Best Car Warranty Company

There’s a lot to consider when trying to find the right car warranty company for your needs. The following tips will help you navigate your many options and make the best vehicle protection decision.

To figure out what level of coverage you need, take into consideration your vehicle’s reliability and your capacity to pay for potentially expensive repairs down the road. Most companies have three levels of coverage to choose from: bumper-to-bumper, mid-level and powertrain.

An exclusionary vehicle service contract also referred to as bumper-to-bumper coverage, which mimics a factory warranty, is the highest and most expensive level of coverage. A powertrain plan on the other hand is cheaper but still covers the most important components of a vehicle such as the transmission, engine and drive axles. If you’re looking for something in between, a mid-level contract may give you the peace of mind you’re looking for.

In May 2024, we conducted a survey with 1,000 participants who had purchased an extended car warranty. The most important factor when choosing a warranty provider was coverage options for 29% of respondents. In second, 25% of participants said the total cost was most important to them and the third highest factor was coverage benefits for 22% of respondents.

For the same survey we filtered the respondents to only see what the customers of our top five providers said. When asked how much they paid for their warranty plan, the majority said between $2,000 and $3,500. This tracks with our industry average of $2,500. Some paid as little as $1,000 for their vehicle service contracts, while others paid $4,500 or more to protect their cars.

What you pay for an extended auto warranty depends on the following variables:

  • Vehicle make and model: Certain auto brands have higher repair and replacement part costs than others. High-end vehicles and foreign brands typically fall into this category.
  • Vehicle age and mileage: Older cars with high mileage are at greater risk for serious issues and pricey repairs, which leads to higher extended warranty costs.
  • Coverage level: Prices can vary significantly from a basic powertrain plan to an exclusionary plan that has only a short list of exclusions.
  • Deductible: Choosing a lower deductible will lead to higher monthly payments on a vehicle service contract.
  • Warranty provider: The price of a vehicle service contract will also vary from one provider to another. This is why it’s so important to compare quotes from at least three companies before buying a plan.

You can purchase extended vehicle protection plans from auto manufacturers or third-party providers. An auto manufacturer is the only true source of an “extended warranty,” as the plans sold by independent providers are actually vehicle service contracts. Aside from this technicality, the coverage you get from these sources can be quite similar.

There are two basic types of third-party warranty companies: brokers and direct providers. Endurance is a direct provider, which means there’s no middleman between you and your coverage when it’s time to file a claim. Most independent warranty companies are brokers, meaning there’s an administrator that handles the actual claims. This setup can lead to frustrating delays at times.

Along with coverage quotes, we recommend that you explore several warranty providers’ sample contracts and customer reviews as you shop for a plan. It’s also important to check each company’s BBB rating and any awards won.

Car Warranty Companies: FAQ

Below are some frequently asked questions about car warranty companies:

After comparing leading providers, we chose Endurance as the best coverage provider available. The company works with customers directly and offers six coverage plans — more than most competitors. Endurance contracts extend up to eight years with unlimited miles.

Extended warranties can be worth it for the peace of mind they provide. After your factory new car warranty expires, you’ll have to pay out of pocket for all car repairs. With a vehicle service contract, you’re only responsible for a deductible and the cost of the contract. Warranties are also worth it for drivers who want a predictable auto budget.

Extended warranties cover your vehicle mechanically, keeping you from paying out of pocket for expensive repairs due to a mechanical failure. Extended warranties don’t typically cover wear-and-tear items like brake pads or routine maintenance like oil changes. However, they usually do come with perks like rental car coverage and roadside assistance.
