We all have a basic human need to feel safe: to be free from threats, to have trust and support, to be able to relax. Security – the sense of being safe physically, emotionally, and environmentally – impacts wellbeing in many ways, including physical health, emotional wellbeing, and how we manage stress. In addition, when you feel safe, you can focus on higher pursuits, such as your calling or sense of purpose in life.
While we can make smart choices to protect ourselves, our personal security is not always entirely within our control. External factors, from the impacts of racism to natural disasters to destabilized political systems, can erode our sense of security and increase fear.
The first step in being as safe as you can is acknowledging what you can control, including your own behavior and the products you use, and learning self-protective habits to increase your wellbeing.
Surround yourself with positive people who will support you without trying to solve your problems for you. Do things you enjoy – get active! Be kind to yourself when you are feeling tired or run-down. Don't try to over do it, or even to do what you would normally do, at these times.
It's normal to feel sad, angry, or low sometimes. But if you have poor wellbeing for a long time you might start to find things more difficult to cope with. Maintaining high levels of wellbeing also contributes to success.
The Take 5 steps to wellbeing (Connect, Keep learning, Be active, Take notice and Give) approach contributes to improving wellbeing in its fullest sense, both physically and emotionally, where people feel good and function well.
The Five Ways to Wellbeing are simple ways to improve the mental and social wellbeing and includes the 5 actions of: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, give. Incorporating the Five Ways into your daily routine is easy, free, and can be done anywhere and in a way that suits you.

This means that they should eat a healthy diet and avoid inactivity. They should not put their health at risk, for example, through smoking or consuming excess alcohol.
