I've noticed at least for several months now (probably happening longer) that when I look at battery usage, the Apple Wallet app is using 50% or more of the battery in terms of drainage. I've done everything short of restoring the phone from a backup and it continues. I use Apple Pay on my watch periodically at the store, otherwise I rarely pull up the wallet app. I do have an Apple card and numerous cards and passes in my wallet. I do NOT have express transit card set up or enabled. I know that has been an issue for some. When I check the battery screen and show activity, it shows wallet use <1 min.

I've searched around and I can't find where this is a widespread issue, nor do I see any solutions. I'm really hoping when I get my 14 Pro it will resolve it but I'm not optimistic. Any ideas that I may not have tried? I'm pretty tech and iPhone savvy so I absolutely know the basics but perhaps there is some bug or obscure setting I'm not seeing?

*EDIT* I guess this should appear in tips and troubleshooting

So the battery report says that the wallet is using less than a minute?

If so, it is not to be worth worrying about.

Correct but why would the wallet show 50%+ of usage by app when I’ve been using a number of apps much more. No way on a normal day the wallet should be using up over 50% of the battery.

It shows like that for the last 2 hours and last week. I’ve reset the statistics and same thing.

If you are not using your phone for anything, it could be showing where the apps does a quick conformation on you credit cards, taking less than a minute and if you have not used your phone for anything else, that would account for the 50% power use even though it was a very small amount.

I’m using my phone all the time for one thing or another all day long so no reason ever the wallet should be using that much of the battery in relevance to other apps

I have the same issue with my iPhone 12 Pro Max since this morning.

After unplugging my iPhone this morning, I immediately noticed that my iPhone feels a lot warmer than usual, and a severe battery drain, like dropping 20% in 1.5hrs.

I have a 5w wireless Qi charger at work, and usually it only takes less than 3hrs to charge to full from 60-70%. But after a whole day it is still not full or near full.

I checked the battery usage just now and noticed the Wallet app is using 59% of the battery drain.

I also noticed my Apple Watch 5 has battery drain issues. I usually have at least 40% after a day, but today it only has 13% left when I got home and it is also warm to the touch.

Did you find a fix for it?

Do you have background refresh on? If you use wallet “all the time”, your iPhone has learned that you need it refreshed “all the time”.

*nevermind wallet is not in background refresh.

Make sure you close Apple Wallet when it’s not in use.

I use Apple Wallet each day and I checked my battery use over the last 10 days and the app has used a negligible amount of battery that it is recorded as “—“ in battery usage.

Thanks for your reply, JM!

I only have a Visa card and a few loyalty rewards cards added in my Wallet app.

Last night I opened the Wallet app and noticed it has my Visa card open, and I suspected that it was the cause.

I switched back to the main screen of the Wallet app where it shows all cards and passes. Then the phone started to cool down and the battery drain seemed to stopped.

Today after 40min commute back home while playing music and using Google maps on my iPhone, the battery only dropped to 94% from 97%. And my Apple Watch has 45% left.

Anyway, thanks again for all your recommendations and assistance! Have a wonderful evening, JM!

Thanks Andeddu for your suggestions!

I have a bad habit of closing all background apps LOL. So, there were no apps running in the background when that happened.

I think I was able to fix the problem by opening the Wallet app, closing my Visa card and returning to the main screen of the Wallet app.

Again, appreciate your help! Have a good evening!
